|Lady Cats fall in consolation bracket at Quinlan|
|From Staff Reports|
Nov. 21, 2005 - QUINLAN - The Sulphur Springs Lady Cats went cold in the second half of their game against Carrollton Ranchview on Saturday, falling in the consolation bracket, 60-38.
Ranchview (3-5) led 49-38 going into the fourth quarter, then used a zone defense to held hold Sulphur Springs scoreless in the final period.
The Lady Cats were hurt early by foul trouble to senior post Bridgette Nash and late by cold shooting.
Junior post Cresha Hubbard scored 13 points, but Nash added just two after being hit with four early fouls. Stephanie Connally and Whitney Jordan scored two points each.
"Our perimeter players went cold from the outside late in the game. It was a game in the first three quarters, but we really just went cold in the fourth quarter," said SSHS head coach Tina Carrillo. "They went into a zone, and we weren't as patient as we needed to be. We couldn't get the ball inside and settled from some outside shots and just weren't hitting them."
After coming out with less than desired intensity in the first two games of the Quinlan Ford Round Ball Round Up tournament, the Lady Cats were more focused for the final contest, the coach said. Part of the learning curve for the team is getting used to playing together. The squad is made up of three seniors, two juniors, three sophomores and two freshmen.
"We didn't come home with a 'W' but we had our intensity back," Carrillo said. "We brought our game with us on Saturday. Overall, I was comfortable with the way we played. We're young and we still lack that team chemistry, that camaraderie from having played together.
"We're still making progressive steps. We've got a lot of young players that need to see some playing time, and in giving them that, I think we're making progressive steps in feeling comfortable on the court and getting the feel for each other."
The Lady Cats (0-5) will look for their first win Tuesday when they host Paris Chisum. The JV and freshmen games are scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m., with the varsity game to get underway at about 5 p.m.
