May 11, 2005 - MOUNT PLEASANT - The Yantis Owls made an early exit in the Class A state playoffs Tuesday night.

After making it to the big dance for the first time in seven years, the Owls (14-7) ran into the potent attack of the Union Hill Bulldogs in a 21-2 bi-district loss.

That sets up a regional quarterfinal match-up with the Bulldogs (19-4) facing the Miller Grove Hornets with site, time, and place to be determined. Miller Grove (13-4), the champions of District 14-A, swept Trenton in a best-of-three series last week.

Union Hill, regional finalist in 2004, batted through the lineup in three of four innings off starter Miles Davis and reliever Chris Thompson and scored in every inning of the contest. Davis was pulled after 1/3 of an inning and also gave up one walk in the game.

The Bulldogs opened up the first inning scoring seven runs on five hits off of Davis as Shawn Hayes opened up the game with a single, and following a Randy Albright line drive back to the pitcher, Dallas Jones reached on an error. Brady Jones then drove in both runners with a two-run single.

Mitch Clemens then reached on an error and scored on Brock Blair's RBI single. Eddie Fisher walked, Cory Brummell loaded the bases with a single, and Brady Helton hit into a RBI fielder's choice for a 6-0 lead. Hayes rounded out the first inning scoring with an RBI single for a 7-0 Union Hill advantage.

In the second inning, Union Hill again capitalized for a big inning as they scored seven runs on six hits as Brady Jones, Clemens, Baxter, Fisher, Brummell, Helton and Bell scored in the inning.

Thompson once again struggled in the third inning as Blair opened up the inning by reaching on an error and scoring on Fisher's RBI sacrifice fly for a 15-0 lead.

Helton then reached base with a single, followed by a single from Hayes, and back-to-back errors allowing two runs to score. Brady Jones then smacked a three-run shot to left for a 20-0 lead.

Yantis scored two runs in the top of the fourth inning as Miles Davis reached on an error, followed by a walk to Jeremy Hurley. Davis scored on an error during Jordan Davis' at-bat, and Hurley scored on an error during Colten Glenn's at-bat.

Union Hill scored the final run of the game in the bottom of the fourth as Hayes drove in Baxter for the 21-2 finale.

Yantis was led by Devin Frazier, who went 1-for-2 at the plate with a single in the third inning.

Hayes and Brady Jones went 4-for-4 at the plate, as Jones had five RBI and three runs scored, while Hayes had an RBI.

Hayes picked up the win on the mound going three innings, giving up one hit, one walk and six strikeouts. Dallas Jones came into the game in relief, going two innings with one walk and four strikeouts.
