SSHS tracksters finish year at regional track meet

May 2, 2005 - DENTON - Sulphur Springs athletes received two more disappointments at the regional track meet on Saturday, as the school was shut out of a state berth for the first time in three years.

Senior sprinter Keelan Green was leading the 200-meter dash with about 60 meters to go, but pulled a hamstring and faded to sixth.

Junior shot putter Bridgette Nash, meanwhile, just missed a state berth when she finished third even with her personal best throw.

Sophomore Emily Bouyear, competing in the 1,600-meter run, ran her fastest time of the year, a 6:07.53, and placed 17th overall.

Green and Nash had both been banking on a place at the state track and field meet in two weeks, but they had to place in the top two at the Class 4A, Region II meet at Fouts Field in Denton to advance.

Nash finished third at the regional meet last year, and with Red Oak senior D'Andra Carter, the state record holder, in the field, the only real question was who would come in second.

Nash was fifth going into her final throw, then unleashed a throw of 40-feet, 5 1/2 inches, which ended up one inch short of West Mesquite's Traci Block. Carter won the event with a throw of 42-6 3/4.

"It was devastating to lose by one inch, especially to have been in the same position last year and losing by four inches," Nash said. "The throw came a little bit too late."

Even though she threw a personal best by five inches, Nash said, "At the time, it really didn't matter because I came up one inch short, but yes, I'm proud of 40 feet, 5 1/2 inches. I feel real good about that."

Nash's next-best throw was 38-6 on her first attempt. That put her second in her flight and fifth going into the finals.

Green's experience at the regional meet was a series of heart-breaks.

First, the sprint relay team of which he was a member, ran poorly and did not qualify for the finals. Then, he was disqualified in the prelims of the 100-meter dash on Friday for a false start.

On Saturday, it looked like he would find redemption in the 200. Running from lane 3, he got out of the blocks well and was leading coming out of the turn. On the home stretch, he was in the lead until he felt his hamstring pull with about 60 meters to go.

He finished sixth in 22.19, almost a full second off his best time of the season. He went into the meet with a 21.24 - tied for the fastest clocking in the state this year.

"When the kid from Spruce (Edward Coleman) made a move on him, Keelan tried to get that next gear, and that's when he felt the hamstring," said SSHS coach Robert Wallace.

Justin Northwest's Ryan Varner edged out Coleman at the tape to win the event in 21.36.
