|SSHS tennis team dominates pre-district tournament|
|From Staff Reports|
March 30, 2005 - GREENVILLE - The SSHS tennis team made a near-sweep of the pre-district tournament on Tuesday, taking two of the top three places in girls singles, girls doubles and boys doubles, and placing second in boys singles.
The pre-district tourney, which is used for seeding purposes for the 12-4A tournament on April 13-14, included all of the district teams but Texas High.
Of the five remaining teams, Sulphur Springs was clearly dominant.
SSHS' Cynthia Sanchez defeated freshman teammate Tara Moore in the girls singles championship match, while the boys doubles finals pitted two more Wildcat duos, and it was Brant Small and Luke Panter beating Paul Pattberg and Landon McCaig. In the girls doubles, Aly Jackson and Lauren Longino won the title, while Morgan McCormack and Kendall Smith placed third. In a talent-filled boys singles side, Cody Moore captured second.
"This was a very important tournament for us, and the kids beared down and focused on the job at hand and did a tremendous job," said SSHS head coach Susan Reynolds. "It seems our players meeting each other in the finals is becoming a habit."
This was the second straight tournament that SSHS has dominated in the same manner.
In playing opponents other than their teammates, Sulphur Springs netters went 16-3.
In the girls singles, Sanchez turned around last week's result by upending Moore, 6-3, 6-3, in the championship. Both girls won their two earlier matches easily in straight sets.
"Cynthia and Tara were in top form and played their usual consistent tennis all the way through the finals," Reynolds said.
In the girls doubles, Jackson and Longino won their quarterfinal match easily, but had to come back from a first-set loss to take a three-set victory in the semifinal. In the championship, they beat Mount Pleasant's Hosmer/Glover, 6-1, 6-1.
McCormack and Smith fell to the MP duo in three sets in the semis, then won the third-place game by default.
"I expected our girls doubles to meet up in the finals, but Morgan and Kendall ran up against a consistent Mount Pleasant team and just couldn't pull out the key points," Reynolds said. "Aly and Lauren survived a few scares, but beared down to play some great tennis in the finals."
On the boys side, Panter and Small won all three of their matches in straight sets, including a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Pattberg and McCaig in the finals.
"Luke and Brant, and Paul and Landon played great tennis all the way, and even though the score doesn't show it, they bring out the best in each other and had a great match," the coach explained."
In the boys singles, Moore beat Trace Cochran of Paris in a tie-breaker, three-setter, 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), but was knocked off by North Lamar's Mark Taylor, 2-6, 1-6, in the finals.
Reynolds was obviously pleased with the performance of her team, but was disappointed that Texas High, which has a strong tennis program, was not at the tournament going into the seeding meeting on Wednesday.
"I told the kids they did an awesome job, but we have another hurdle to jump," Reynolds comments, "and that's Texas High."
