June 2, 2005 - Two weeks after his senior season ended, Miller Grove's Ben Whillock made sure he will continue to play baseball.

Whillock last weekend signed a scholarship offer from Cisco Junior College to pitch for the Wranglers.

As a senior southpaw for the Hornets, Whillock compiled a 5-1 record with a 2.14 ERA, and averaged over two strikeouts per inning by fanning 104 batters in 42 innings during the regular season. He also had a .475 batting average.

On Sunday, he arranged a tryout at Cisco Junior College with head coach David White and pitching coach Shawn Hughes. They were immediately impressed.

"Ben did a great job at our try out on Sunday," White said. "We could not work out on our field due to the rain. We had to go inside and workout in the

gym. He did really well off of flat ground.

"Shawn, our pitching coach, liked what he saw and Ben agreed to join our squad."

He will be trying to help the Wranglers build a program that went 4-24 in conference play and 12-32 overall in 2005. In high school, he was a mainstay for the Hornets, who were District 14-A champions and made it to the regional quarterfinals before losing to Union Hill.

"He seemed to be exactly what we look for here at Cisco. He was polite, understood our situation, and wanted to help us build a winning program," White explained. "We feel like we got a big piece to our puzzle."

Cisco JC is located in Eastland County and is a member of the North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference.
