Hopkins County softball teams headed to Dothan, Alabama

July 28, 2005 - A pair of state champion Hopkins County softball teams are headed to the Dixie National Tournament in Dothan, Ala., today.

Representing Texas in the 12-team tournaments will be the Angels, coached by Lisa McCaig, and the Debs, coached by Jeff Box.

Both teams will be staying at the same hotel, but they will be playing their games at different softball complexes in Dothan, which has a population of about 60,000 people.

The Angels will open their tournament at 4:30 p.m. Saturday against South Carolina. The winner will play the Florida/Arkansas winner at 3 p.m. Sunday, while the losers will play at 12:30 p.m. in the double-elimination bracket.

The Angels' games will be played at the Marvin Lewis Complex, which is a four-field complex.

The Debs will open at 5 p.m. Saturday against Tennessee at the five-field Westgate Softball Complex. The winner will face the Georgia/Alabama winner at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, with the losers to play at 12:30 p.m.

The Angels won their state tournament in Sherman last week, taking the championship game by a 20-0 score over Fannin County.

Team members are Cydnee Devereaux, Hailey Dixon, Courtney Dunlap, Mary Lopez, Cassidy Luna, Enlin Mantha. Lexi McCaig, Meagan McCullough, Katie Stewart, Jamie Waldrop, Kirstie Wallace, Samantha Ward. They are coached by Lisa McCaig, Danny Stewart and John McCullough.

The Debs advanced to the World Series for the second consecutive year, with seven players from last year's team that went to Tennessee returning this season.

Team members are Betsy Blount, Shaunda Box, Kaylee Cotten, Krissy Cotten, Holly Franks, Allisen Hale, NeNe Hynson, Terra Jackson, Kaneisha Johnson, Cassie McClendon, Jennifer Moreland and Ashley Wilson. Coaches are Jeff Box, Timmy Cotten and Terry Blount.
