July 6, 2005 - Four Sulphur Springs Lady Cats were recognized this week for excellence in the classroom as well as on the softball diamond.
Betsy Blount, NeNe Hynson, Stephanie Kethley and Christina Patchen were all named Academic All-State performers by the Texas Association of Girls Coaches.
For each of the girls, it is their second Academic All-State recognition. All four received the award for volleyball as well this past school year.
To be named Academic All-State, a girl must be a senior with an overall grade point average of 94 or better in grades 9-11, be a varsity participant and be of "good moral character," according to TGCA guidelines.
They were all nominated by head coach John McCullough.
All four were graduating seniors this season for the Lady Cats, and they were each multi-sport participants. In addition to softball, all four played volleyball, plus Blount ran cross country, while Hynson and Patchen also played basketball.
This keeps up a string of academic excellence for the Lady Cats. There were eight girls named to the academic team last season.
McCullough, who was an All-Star coach last year, will be participating in the TGCA summer convention again this year when he teams with Frisco coach Max Bledsoe to give a presentation to other coaches.
They will describe how to maximize time when running practice schedules. The summer convention is next week in Austin.
