Area Basketball: District 20-A, Div. II race tightens up

Jan. 29, 2005 - In a key district match-up for the Saltillo, the Lady Lions picked up an overtime win over Karnack, while the North Hopkins girls remained undefeated in district play.

On the boys side, Sulphur Bluff pulled off an impressive win over Avinger, and North Hopkins improved to 4-1 in district play with a win over Fruitvale.

The District 20-A, Div. II boys race for the second and final playoff spot tightened as Yantis is 4-3, followed by Avinger and Bloomburg, both at 3-4, with three games to play. Karnack leads the district at 7-0.

BOYS

Sulphur Bluff 70, Avinger 58

SULPHUR BLUFF - Behind 30 points from Sam Pettit and 19 points from James Atwood, the Sulphur Bluff Bears improved to 10-11 overall and 2-5 in District 20-A, Div. II.

Sulphur Bluff held a 46-28 lead at the half, but both teams were even in the second half at 34-34.

Avinger (3-4) was led in scoring by Tyrus Dowell with 34 points and Willie Moody with 15 points.

KARNACK - With both teams tied at 21-21 at the intermission, No. 11 Karnack took care of business in the second half with a 15-5 third quarter.

Miles Payne led the way with a team-high 12 points for Saltillo (2-5 in District 20-A, Div. II), and teammate Derek McClure pitched in 11 points in the loss.

Karnack (7-0) had a game-high 14 points from Jay Scott, 11 from DeAnthony Graham, and 10 from Malcolm Thomas.

BIRTHRIGHT - The Panthers improved to 13-10 on the year behind 14 points from Zack Horne and 13 points from Cory Johnson Friday night in the District 19-A, Div. I win.

The game was homecoming for the school, and the Panthers now will prepare for Campbell Tuesday night at home. Tipoff for the varsity game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

The Bobcats were led in scoring by senior Tommy Barnhart with 17 points, Sam Bugg had 11 points, and Ben Cox chipped in 10 points in the loss.

BLOOMBURG - The Yantis Owls fell to 18-7 overall and 4-3 in District 20-A, Div. II with the loss.

The Owls were leading with 30 seconds remaining in the game but missed a lay-up, and Bloomburg converted on seven-of-eight free throw attempts down the stretch.

Jarrett Russell and Colby Ogle scored 16 points each in the game as six players scored for the Owls.

Bloomburg (3-4) was led in scoring by Stanley and Sparco with 14 points respectively and teammates Dunlop and Sheffield scoring 10 points respectively in the win.

LADONIA - The Miller Grove Hornets had a double-double from Lucas Kerby with 25 points and 18 rebounds in their win over Fannindel during their homecoming week.

"We had a very good shooting night," coach Sam Panter said. "We shot 44 percent from the field. We did a better job of getting the ball to our post players and that opened up our outside game."

MG's Frank Weaver pumped in 23 points and teammate Bradley Darrow added 13 points in the win.

Jarrette Scott was the leading scorer for Fannindel with 20 points, and teammates Tyson Shaw scored 18 along with 12 from Keiston Champion.

GIRLS

North Hopkins 67, Fruitvale 45

BIRTHRIGHT - Katy Williams had another double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds Friday night as the Lady Panthers improved to 17-8 overall, 5-0 in District 19-A, Div. I.

Nine players scored in the game for the Lady Panthers led by Sara Weir with 21 points and Elizabeth McPherson with 14 points.

"Sara and Elizabeth had good games offensively tonight," NH head coach Tim Menke said. "Our team needs to play better defensively in the half court."

Barney led Fruitvale with 20 points and Stone pitched in 13 points.

KARNACK - Tied at 43-43 at the end of regulation, Saltillo outscored Karnack 15-11 in the extra frame to pick up a key District 20-A, Div. II win.

Chloe Roberts led the Lady Lions with 23 points and Winter Stevens had 13 points as they will host Sulphur Bluff Tuesday night. Saltillo is now 7-0 in district play.

Karnack was led in scoring by Keandrea Hill with a game-high 24 points.

BLOOMBURG - A slow start for the Yantis Lady Owls was all Bloomburg need in a 56-47 win Friday night.

Bloomburg had a 13-3 lead after the first quarter and led 30-23 at the break, but Yantis could not get any closer in the second half.

Sarah Collins had a team-high 23 points for the Lady Owls and Robbin Allen added eight points.

Bloomburg had two players in double-figures with 27 points from Megan Lummus and 13 from Chrissy Peacock.
