Jan. 17, 2005 -- Four Sulphur Springs girls showed their mettle on the volleyball court and their brains in the classroom as they were named Academic All-State by the Texas Girls Coaches Association last week.
The four - Betsy Blount, Ne-Ne Hynson, Stephanie Kethley and Christina Patchen - all qualified for the award by maintaining a 94 cumulative average through their high school careers, scoring high on their college entrance exams, and receiving letters of recommendation from their coach, John McCullough, and school counselor.
The four are seniors and are all involved in numerous school activities as well as being multi-sport athletes.
"We had six Academic All-State players last year on the softball team and four this year on volleyball, so I think that shows that our girls put a lot of hard work into both their academic performance as well as their athletic performance," McCullough said.
Blount, who also plays softball and runs track, was named Most Valuable Setter in District 12-4A, while Patchen, a basketball and softball athlete, was First Team All-District. Kethley, who also plays softball, and Hynson, who competes in basketball and softball, were Honorable Mention at the district meeting.
They join five SSHS football players who were named Academic All-State earlier this month.
