Jan. 13, 2005 -- COMO - The Como-Pickton Eagles now have a soccer team.
For the first time at the school, coach Tony Martinez and Tamie Carrell will coach the boys' and girls' soccer teams.
"The school district wanted something for the other kids to do other than football, basketball and stuff like that, and we have a lot of kids who don't play sports and soccer is for them," Martinez said. "They have always wanted soccer here at the high school, and Mr. (Bryan) Neal told me he wanted a soccer program and now we have one here."
Martinez has 16 boys on his roster right now, and that will probably be the amount of kids that will make it to the games throughout the year.
"We have on my roster 16 kids and we usually have about 14 show up most of the time due to circumstances and stuff like that because of kids working and we will carry probably 14-16 to games this season," Martinez said. "We are very young so we have like six or seven freshman, five sophomores, and two or three seniors on the team."
The roster is as follows: Noe Tellez, Everett Jennings, Juan Bautista, John Busby, Jose Diosdado, Everado Perez, Tony Mercado, Tino Vasquez, Pedro Gutierrez, Alberto Gutierrez, Chris Steenbeck, Omar Perez, Salvador Mejia, Everado Morales, Anthone Low, Jose Hernandez, Erik Torres and Paul Jacobs.
"My expectations are that we have the athletes and we have kids that play soccer year-round, but the problem is that it is not organized soccer and it is a lot of one-on-one stuff," he said. "I expect us to be team-organized in learning all of the rules, and this is going to be a learning year for the team."
The Eagles will play at Greenville tonight after playing North Lamar Tuesday night.
"We played well against North Lamar. We played against their varsity during the first half and they scored three goals on us, 3-0. The second half we played against their JV and came back to win 6-3," Martinez said. "Perez, Vasquez, Diosdado and Tellez were the scorers for the game with two goals respectively."
For the Lady Eagle soccer team, Coach Carrell will have 14 girls on the roster, and she said the team is very excited to be starting the program.
"They have really caught on, and they are excited about being here and their desire is so high," Carrell said. "It has been really great, and it is great to see soccer come to a small school. It is difficult because we have to play other 4A schools and the kids are really excited about the sport."
Como-Pickton has scrimmaged Texas High and will play Paris in their first game on Saturday.
"We played Texas High Monday and the girls played really well even though we were beaten in the game, and we had to play their varsity," she said. "Texas High is a scrappy team and they really hustle."
With only two players having prior experience in soccer, the Lady Eagles have been working on the basics and learning the rules of competition.
"We are basically trying to learn basic skills and the knowledge of the game," Carrell said. "If the girls will put in a lot of time for that skill level at home as well as during practice that we will be able to contend with the bigger schools."
The Lady Eagle roster consists of Maria Gutierrez, Mayra Perez, Olga Tellez, Lourdes Morales, Vanessa Moreau Sipiere, Ashleigh Carpenter, Alyssa Taylor, Susan Miranda, Angeles Vicente, Sam Jones, Mary Jo Sandate, Olga Salinas, Blanca Gutierrez and Angel Perez.
