Jan. 12, 2005 -- SULPHUR BLUFF - The Saltillo boys and girls basketball teams made it a clean sweep Tuesday night in a key District 20-A, Div. II match-up.

The Saltillo Lions picked up their first district win of the season, while the Lady Lions kept their district record unblemished with an impressive win.

GIRLS

The Lady Lions improved to 19-3 overall and 3-0 in district play with a 27-18 win over Sulphur Bluff as only three Lady Bears players scored in the game.

"I was really proud of their defensive effort because I thought we really dominated defensively throughout the game even though we didn't rebound well and they kept getting second and third shots on us," Saltillo head coach Garry Davison said.

Saltillo opened up the game on a 7-0 run as Jenny Prather nailed a jumper off an assist from Chloe Roberts with 5:10 remaining in the first quarter.

Sulphur Bluff then countered for their first basket of the game on a jumper by senior Jill Jaggers to cut the deficit to 7-2 before giving up another 6-0 run in the quarter.

Roberts scored six of her game-high eight points in the third quarter and ended the period with a jumper at the buzzer for a 25-16 lead heading into the final period.

Davison said he was proud of how his team shut down Sulphur Bluff in the second half and how they were able to take control of the game.

"I thought we did a good job in the second half of taking those second and third shots away from them, and when we did that we pretty much controlled the tempo because we didn't want to come out and play man on us so we didn't have to force anything in the game," Davison said.

Ashley Pettit and Jaggers each scored seven points in the game, and Pettit also had nine rebounds for the Lady Bears.

Saltillo had seven points and seven rebounds from Cassie Hailey and Winter Stevens contributed six points, three rebounds, and four steals in the win.

The Lady Bears fall to 9-8 on the season and 0-3 in district play as they will travel to Yantis Friday night with the junior varsity boys starting a three-game set at 5 p.m.
