SSHS tennis team opens season against Wills Point
From Staff Reports

Jan. 12, 2005 -- WILLS POINT - The Sulphur Springs tennis team played Wills Point to a 9-9 draw Tuesday in their opening action of the spring season.

The contest was played in team tennis format, which is played in the fall, because Wills Point is still playing that style. Despite the last minute change, SSHS head coach Susan Reynolds said the Wildcats played well.

The boys won all six of their singles matches and took two-of-three doubles matches. The girls didn't fare as well.

"We swept a lot of the guys matches and struggled with the girls, but I saw some things we need to work on, so by the time we play Van next Tuesday, we should work some of the kinks out," Reynolds said. "Overall, I'm very proud of the way we're starting the season."

Luke Panther and Brant Small won both their doubles and singles matches for the Wildcats. Tara Moore won her singles match, the only SSHS girls winner.

"I was very proud of the way the kids played. The wind was horrible and when we changed the format, I was a little concerned about how the kids would do," Reynolds said. "We started off very sluggish and there were first-match nerves, but by the time we got to the singles, the kids had settled down and played some very impressive tennis for the first match."
