Yantis pulls off double championship at Junior High district tournament

Feb. 7, 2005 - YANTIS - The Yantis girls and boys pulled off a double championship Saturday in the finals of the NET West Junior High District Basketball Tournament.

The North Hopkins Lady Panthers finished in second place behind Yantis at the end-of-the-year tournament, while the Miller Grove Lady Hornets won two-of-three games to take the consolation title.

On the boys side, North Hopkins had two close games losses in the tournament and picked up an impressive win over Boles.

 

BOYS

Championship

Yantis 36, Fruitvale 28

Yantis won the boys championship over Fruitvale behind 11 points from Zach Leatherwood, nine points from Tony Garcia, and eight points from Daniel Cerrantini.

Fruitvale 29, North Hopkins 22

With a 14-13 lead heading into the locker-room against the Fruitvale Bobcats, the North Hopkins Panthers went ice-cold in the second half.

The Panthers will wrap up the season tonight against at Yantis with four games scheduled starting at 4:30 p.m.

Jon Watkins led the Panthers with six points and Jose Cadena chipped in five points in the loss.

North Hopkins 32, Boles 18

Jydarius Hawkins, Juan Delgado and Watkins all scored a team-high eight points in an impressive win over the Boles Hornets.

North Hopkins held an 18-7 lead at the halftime and led heading into every quarter during the game.

Miller Grove 31, North Hopkins 28

An 11-0 fourth quarter spurt by the Miller Grove Hornets gave them the come-from-behind victory in their final game of the tournament.

Hawkins was North Hopkins' leading scorer with eight points, while teammates Loranzo Rivera and Delgado scored six points each.

Miller Grove was led by Harmon with 10 points, while Evans added six.

In the championship game, both teams were tied 15-15 going into the intermission until Yantis outscored North Hopkins 16-9 in the second half.

Amanda Collins led the way for Yantis with 12 points, while Shelby Allen added 8.

Virginia Thomas scored 12 for the Lady Panthers.

Seven Lady Panthers scored in an impressive win over Boles led by Chastin Smiddy with 14 points and Tana Hall with 12 points during the first game of the tournament.

Boles was held scoreless in the fourth quarter.

Brittany Couch led North Hopkins with a game-high 15 points, and teammate Kayla Williams chipped in 10 points against Campbell.

North Hopkins outscored Campbell in every quarter to pick up the double-figure win.

Williams led Campbell with 11 points and Scroggins added eight points in the loss.

The Miller Grove Lady Hornets came out cold in the first half and were down 15-8 at the intermission. They stormed back, but it wasn't enough against Campbell.

"We were really cold at first and didn't warm up until the last quarter," MG coach Sara Garmon said.

Diane Sparks led Miller Grove with 12 points, while teammate Mari Delcastillo added eight in the loss.

Miller Grove's 11-1 run in the fourth quarter against the Boles Lady Hornets put the game out of reach on Saturday.

"Again we outlasted the other team and got hot in the fourth quarter," Garmon said.

Mari Delcastillo was the game's leading scorer with 16 points and the Lady Hornets shot 12-of-20 at the free throw line.

With only five players on the Miller Grove roster for the consolation championship against Cumby, the Lady Hornets were outscored 24-11 in the second half but held on for the win.

"I only had five players on Saturday - then two fouled out and we played the last quarter with three girls," Garmon said. "They were scoring layups with only three girls against their five in the game."

Delcastillo and Sparks led the way for Miller Grove with 15 and 10 points, respectively.

Cumby was paced by Lemon with six points.
