Area Basketball: Miller Grove wins on final shot of game

Dec. 14, 2005 - The Miller Grove boys narrowly escaped a tough Lone Oak team to improve to 10-4 on the year, while the Yantis boys swept Dodd City on the road, Como-Pickton beat Honey Grove, and North Hopkins took care of Wolfe City.

On the girls side, North Hopkins won big over Wolfe City and Como-Pickton lost its district opener to the Grand Saline Lady Indians.


Miller Grove 54, Lone Oak 53

LONE OAK — The Miller Grove Hornets improved to 10-4 on the year with a last second win over the Buffaloes Tuesday night.

Miller Grove's James Weaver threw a length-of-the-floor pass with three seconds remaining to Lucas Kerby, who hit a lay-up at the buzzer for the 54-53 finale.

Kerby finished the game with 19 points and 10 rebounds, and Oscar Delcastillo had 16 points and five boards for Miller Grove.

Lone Oak had a team-high 15 points from Blaine Moore and Chase Johnson in the loss.

"The kids are playing hard but we have got to learn to put 32 minutes together," said MGHS coach Gary Billingsley. "I am very proud of the way we played tonight."

COMO — The Como-Pickton Eagles (9-6) shot 22-of-41 field goals (53.7 percent) against Honey Grove and were led by senior Ray Hayden with 18 points, five rebounds, three steals and two assists Tuesday night.

Senior teammate Clayton Humphrey scored 13 points, three rebounds, four steals and one assist, while Bo Baxter had eight points, six rebounds, one steal, one assist and five blocks.

Honey Grove was led in scoring by Foster with nine points and Miltch with seven.

"Our defense allowed very few second shot attempts for Honey Grove," said CPHS coach Randy Fewell.

BIRTHRIGHT — North Hopkins improved to 10-5 on the year with a big win over Wolfe City.

"We shot the ball well tonight," said North Hopkins coach Steve Drummond. "We are playing good team basketball with balanced scoring every night."

J.P. Whittle scored 16 points for the Panthers, while teammate Steven Crocker scored 15, Cory Johnson had 14 ,and Jake Cockrum had six points and 10 assists at point guard.

Josh Denney and Emmanuel Akers had 10 points each for Wolfe City.

DODD CITY — Jeremy Hurley scored a game-high 14 points with nine rebounds, three steals and five assists, while teammates Chris Thompson and Jarrod Brown scored 12 points each for the Owls.

"We did not play very well," said Yantis coach Harold Gilbreath. "We must quit fouling so much if we want to do good in district play."

Dodd City was led in scoring by Sadler with 10 points.

Yantis (9-4) will play Grand Saline in the first round of the Fruitvale tournament Thursday at 11:30 a.m.

DODD CITY — Daniel Cerretani led Yantis with 19 points and teammate Terry Thompson scored 10 points in their win.

Yantis is now 9-1 and will play at Cumby Dec. 30 at 2 p.m.

BIRTHRIGHT — Eight Lady Panthers scored in the game and were led by Katy Williams with a game-high 22 points, while teammate Ebbonye Johnson pitched in 13 points.

Williams also had eight rebounds, six assists and two steals, while Johnson had five steals, four rebounds and four assists.

The North Hopkins defense held Wolfe City to 7-of-37 shooting (18.9 percent), while the Lady Panthers shot 28-of-69 (40.6 percent). 

Wolfe City was led in scoring by Miller and Shaw with four points each.

GRAND SALINE - The Como-Pickton Lady Eagles fell to 0-1 in District 17-2A play with a double-digit loss to Grand Saline Tuesday night.

Grand Saline's Courtney Dickerson had a game-high 14 points and Jessica Herbert pitched in 12 points.

Freshman Maci Kight had a team-high 15 points and Rebecca Humphrey had 11 points for Como-Pickton.
