Area Basketball: Tournament action underway in Merit, Winnsboro, and Yantis

Dec. 2, 2005 - Honey Grove won a rematch with the North Hopkins boys on Thursday in the opening round of the Bland tournament, while the Cumby girls upended Miller Grove in the Yantis tournament.

In other tournament action, the North Hopkins split their first two games in the Winnsboro tournament while Saltillo defeated Lone Oak and the North Hopkins junior varsity girls advanced with a win over Prairiland.

Saltillo, Fruitvale and Miller Grove also picked up wins in the opening round of the Yantis tournament.


BOYS

Honey Grove 65, North Hopkins 62

MERIT - The game came down to the final eight seconds, when Honey Grove pulled out a disputed win.

North Hopkins senior Cory Johnson made 2-of-3 free throws with eight second left to pull the Panthers to within 63-62, but a Honey Grove player hit a pair of free throws a second later to extend the Warriors' lead to 65-62.

Then, NH's Spenser McQueen put up a 3-pointer at the buzzer and appeared to be fouled, but the Panthers did not get the call. NHHS was behind 33-22 at halftime but outscored Honey Grove, 40-32 in the second half.

J.P. Whittle led North Hopkins (5-3) with 18 points, while Roger Sancho added 13, Johnson 12 and Dustin Clements 10.

Honey Grove was paced by Quarltez Finley with 31 points.

Miller Grove 54, Cumby 51

YANTIS - The Miller Grove Hornets used a big fourth-quarter rally for a come from behind win over Cumby in the opening round of the Yantis tournament.

Miller Grove had a team-high 16 points from Lucas Kerby and 13 points from James Weaver.

Cumby had a game-high 27 points from Jake Petty and nine points from Josh Rodriguez.

YANTIS -Fruitvale took a 37-17 lead into the intermission over Yantis and never looked back in their opening round win.

Hayden had a game-high 26 points for Fruitvale while teammate Cox had 20 points and Hansford pitched in 10 points.

Yantis was led in scoring by Chris Thompson with 15 points and Jordan Davis with eight points.

Lone Oak was led by Chase Lehocky with six points and Ryan Prunty with four points.

YANTIS - Cumby's Karen Lacey put up a double-double with 22 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Lady Trojans to victory in the opening round of the Yantis tournament.

Mary Ugalde added 15 points, six rebounds and six assists for Cumby, while Morgan Lott recorded eight points, and Scarlett Tarno had nine rebounds to go with four points.

For Miller Grove, Leslie Wagley spearheaded the offense with 13 points. Jamie Hayes and Adrian Estrada added six points apiece.

WINNSBORO - North Hopkins Katy Williams put up a double-double with 21 points and 15 rebounds but it wasn't enough against a tough Liberty-Eylau team.

Nancy Castro added six points, one rebound and one steal for North Hopkins.

For Liberty-Eylau, McIntyre had a team-high 12 points, Houff added 11 points and Cason had a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds.

WINNSBORO - The North Hopkins Lady Panthers bounced back in their second round game as Williams had her second double-double of the tournament with 25 points and 18 rebounds.

Nancy Castro added 16 points, two rebounds, two assists and one steal for North Hopkins.

Dallas Christian was led by Money with 10 points and Armstrong with six points.

North Hopkins played Clarksville today in the consolation bracket.

YANTIS - The Yantis Lady Owls were able to hold offf the Lone Oak Lady Buffaloes in the fourth quarter to take the opening round win in the Yantis Invitational Basketball tournament.

Chloe Roberts had a game-high 15 points while teammate Randi Emmons pitched in six points for Yantis.

Lone Oak was led in scoring by Natalie Jenkins with 10 points and Whitney Wallace with seven.

COOPER - North Hopkins Hannah Martel had a game-high 25 points and teammate Jessica Harry added 12 points in their big win Thursday afternoon.

Prairiland was led by Davis with 17 points and Withers with six points.
