Dec. 1, 2005 - The Sulphur Springs Wildcats had one of the most prolific offenses in school history this season, and it showed up on the All-District 12-4A team, voted on by coaches yesterday.
Record-setting junior quarterback Logan Turner was voted as one of the Tri-Most Valuable Players in the district, while school record-holder wide receiver Josh Riley and prolific running back Chris Person were both unanimous picks for the First Team.
Also on First Team were two standout offensive linemen, senior tackle Jose Vargas and senior guard Torrence Wright.
Second Team selections went to senior wide receiver Josh Harrington and junior center Jacob Jenkins on offense, and senior defensive tackle Cole Strawn and junior offensive tackle Stephan Petty on defense.
Honorable Mention awards went to wide receivers Tyler Rhoades and Marc Crook, offensive guard Lucas Garrison, kicker Spenser Daniel, linebacker Zach Attaway, safety Colby Mills and defensive ends Keith Harris and Fred Dale.
Texas High, the district champion, garnered six superlative honors and 14 First Team selections. The superlatives included quarterback Ryan Mallett sharing the MVP honors with Turner and North Lamar running back Broderick Franklin, wide receiver Marquan Matlock as Offensive Player of the Year, linebacker Dustin Earnest as Defensive POY, linebacker Adrian Battle as Defensive Newcomer of the Year, Aaron Kelley and Johnell White as the top offensive and defensive linemen.
Understandably for Sulphur Springs, the majority of the Wildcats' honors went to offensive players.
"All players want individual honors - that's just human nature to be recognized for your efforts - and when the team does better, you get more individual honors," said SSHS head coach Brad Turner. "We had a good year, and offensively we had a really good year.
"To have the District MVP, Josh Riley was as good of an offensive player as there was in the district, Chris Person was a great offensive player, and Jose Vargas was as good of a lineman as there was in the district and we had a lot of good linemen. Torrence Wright had a great year. I'm as proud of him as anybody, from where he came and the strides he made."
The Wildcats didn't get any First Team defensive honors, though Strawn and Petty were both solid Second Team selections.
"I'm proud for Cole and Stephan. They played really good. They were two of our better defensive players," Turner said. "I thought Zach Attaway probably should have made one of the other teams. It's disappointing that more people can't get something, but I'm proud of the ones that were recognized."
The All-District players and their accomplishments were:
Logan Turner (6-1, 180) - The junior quarterback accounted for more than 3,000 yards from scrimmage. He completed 183-of-344 passes for 20 TDs, all of which are school records, for 2,335 yards. He also rushed for 720 yards and nine TDs on 127 carries.
Chris Person (5-10, 195) - The senior running back rushed for 1,712 yards on 230 carries and scored 15 TDs. That included back-to-back 300-yard games in district play.
