April 28, 2005 - FORT WORTH - Three of the Sulphur Springs Lady Cats' top four golfers improved their scores on the second round of the Class 4A, Region II tournament on Wednesday as they moved up one spot into sixth place.
After shooting a 392 on Tuesday, the Lady Cats improved by 10 strokes to shoot a 382 and finish with a 774 at the Doral Tesoro Golf Club.
Sulphur Springs finished the first day of the 36-hole tournament in seventh, but leap-frogged North Lamar in the standings.
They were led by sophomore Whitney McDaniel, who followed the 93 she shot on Tuesday with an 86 on Wednesday. Her second-day score was the 13th-best posted, and she finished in a tie for 20th in the individual standings with a 179.
"Whitney McDaniel had a great second day," said coach Kerry Brice, who took over the job after the district meet because of the absence of Rodney Barthelemess. "She got a little frustrated the first day because the pace was very slow. But, at the turn she sort of picked it up a little bit."
Senior Faith Harry also improved her game, shooting a 94 on the second day, one stroke better than her Tuesday score. Senior Brooke Wilson carded a 100-101 for a 201, sophomore Kylie Littlefield shot three strokes better on Wednesday with a 101, and junior Jessica Anderson finished with a 230 total.
"They were all very consistent. It was a good two days," Brice said. "We had two good days. The kids played well. They played better the second day after they got those first-day jitters out of the way, and the pace was a little better the second day."
Highland Park's two teams took first and second place overall to earn state berths, while the individual championship went to Lake Dallas' Lauren Espinosa, who shot a 72-71-143 to win by three strokes.
