From Staff Reports

Sept. 29, 2004 - MOUNT PLEASANT - The Wildcats not only swept Mount Pleasant in their team tennis match on Tuesday, they secured a regional berth for the first time in four years.

The SSHS tennis team beat Mount Pleasant, 10-0, with none of the sets closer than 6-2.

The Wildcats (2-0 in district) now has a District 12-4A title showdown with Texas High Saturday at Mount Pleasant. The match will begin at 10 a.m.

"When we started two-a-days, we realized the day would come when we would meet up with Texas High," said SSHS head coach Susan Reynolds. "We're happy to have a shot at the title, and our kids are not satisfied yet. They want to prove to Texas High that we want that title bad.

"I'm very proud of these kids. They've worked hard, and they have one more thing to prove to themselves, and I know we'll give Texas High a run for their money."

They won easily against Mount Pleasant. All four of the boys singles and the only girls singles match completed before the 10-point score was achieved ended in 6-0, 6-0 victories for Sulphur Springs.

Brant Small, Paul Pattberg, Jacob Harris and Kendall Smith were all winners in both doubles and singles action for SSHS.

"Coming into this match, I was a little uneasy because I hadn't hear anything about how Mount Pleasant was competitively," Coach Reynolds said. "A coach's worst fear is the unknown.

"Coach Rodriguez (at Mount Pleasant) is rebuilding, and they didn't give us some tough matches, but our kids were ready for anything."

To start off doubles play, Sulphur Springs' top-seeded pair of Cody Moore and Small defeated Pratt/Adame, 6-1, 6-1. That was followed by wins from Ryan Thompson and Luke Panter over their MP counterparts, 6-0, 6-2, and Pattberg/Harris shut out MP's Lee/Acana, 6-0, 6-0.

On the girls side, Sulphur Springs' top duo Cynthia Sanchez and Tara Moore handily defeated Glover/Ruiz, 6-1, 6-1; while Lauren Longino and Aly Jackson dispatched Drange/Buitron, 6-1, 6-2; and Kendall Smith and Morgan McCormack defeated T. Castanon/E. Castanon, 6-0, 6-1.

Then, in the girls singles match, Smith took care of Kaylyn Hasmer, 6-0, 6-0.

Following Saturday's match against Texas High, the SSHS tennis team is scheduled to host Wills Point at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, and will travel to Van on Saturday, Oct. 9.

The regional tennis tournament is scheduled for Oct. 29-30.
