|Cooper's defense bends, but doesn't break|

Sept. 25, 2004 - COOPER - The Cooper Bulldogs gave up almost 400 yards of total offense to Hooks on Friday, but it didn't show up on the scoreboard.
The Bulldogs came away with a 14-6 win in the District 16-2A opener for both teams by holding the Hornets to a single, second-quarter TD.
The Bulldogs turned back Hooks on a goal line stand in the fourth quarter to preserve the win.
Cooper improves to 3-1 on the season, 1-0 in district play, while Hooks fell to 1-3, 0-1.
Senior cornerbacks Marquis Gunn and Kyle Thompson both had outstanding nights, as Gunn registered seven tackles and eight passes defensed, and Thompson was in on eight tackles with six passes broken up. Defensive end Ryan Jones was credited with nine tackles, one fumble recovery, a sack, two caused fumbles and a tackle for loss.
Cooper scored on their first offensive possession as Dewaylon Williams punched it in from 3 yards out. He finished with 104 yards rushing on 24 carries. The other Bulldog TD came on their opening drive of the second half as Ron Morris got the score from 14 yards away. Tommy Daugherty kicked both extra points.
Hooks quarterback Tim Turpen completed 14-of-30 passes for 246 yards without an interception, and the Hornets added another 136 yards rushing. Nine of Turpen's passes went to Cortez Smith for 168 yards.
