Celeste jumps on Cumby early

Sept. 25, 2004 - CUMBY - With a trip to Wolfe City on the line next week for the Cumby Trojans, coach Kent Hawthorne's team is now 2-3 on the season and begins District 17-A play with an 0-1 record.

The Trojans wrapped up a three-game homestand with a loss to the Celeste Blue Devils 34-16 Friday night at Trojan Stadium.

Celeste opened up a quick 14-0 lead in the first quarter on a 65-yard touchdown run and a 28-yard touchdown pass before Cumby could get on the board.

In the second quarter, senior running back Brandon Brown powered his way in from a yard out to cut the deficit to 14-6. Steven Boss scored on the two-point conversion.

Celeste scored one more touchdown toward the end of the first half on a 31-yard touchdown pass for a 21-8 lead heading into the lockerroom.

Celeste extended their lead to 28-8 in the third period with a 3-yard touchdown run heading into the final quarter of play.

Cumby scored their final touchdown of the game in the fourth quarter when quarterback Matt Steward connected with Jake Petty from 3 yards out to cut the deficit to 28-14. Steward converted the two-point try.

Celeste scored their final touchdown on a 26-yard run late in the game, but the PAT was missed for the 34-16 final.

Celeste had 390 yards of total offense in the game compared to 228 yards for the Trojans.

Rusty Vaughan was the Trojans' leading rusher with 70 yards on 11 carries in the game, while Brown finished with 10 carries for 52 yards and one touchdown.

Steward went five-of-15 for 73 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions against the Blue Devils.

In other District 17-A action: Rivercrest beat Melissa 50-7, and as of presstime no score was found on Quinlan Boles at Detroit, while Wolfe City had the week off.
