|Vandals pull out win over SSHS tennis|
|From Staff Reports|
Sept. 23, 2004 - Cody Moore, Brant Small, Ryan Thompson and Kendall Smith were all double winners Tuesday as the SSHS tennis team hosted Van in a non-district tennis match, but the Vandals pulled out an 11-9 win in the team tournament format.
The tennis team will have a Meet the Wildcat Marathon on Saturday, then play Mount Pleasant next Tuesday as they resume district play.
Against Van, Moore and Small teamed up for a doubles victory, then each won their singles match, while Ryan Thompson did the same, and Kendall Smith also won both of her matches on the girls' side.
"This was one of those matches that could have gone either way, unfortunately it didn't go our way today," said SSHS tennis coach Susan Reynolds. "The girls struggled somewhat, but the guys really beared down and got us some crucial wins."
She pointed to a singles match in which Paul Pattberg fell behind 0-5, but came back to win in a tiebreaker, 9-8 (7-6).
"We went with the eight-game pro-set format in singles, and I believe if we'd played two-out-of-three sets, several outcomes would have been different," Reynolds said. "I wanted us to play a team that's similar in competition level, and Van gave our kids a good workout."
In doubles competition, Moore and Small defeated Van's Goode/Maples, 6-4, 6-2; while Luke Panter and Thompson beat McSpadden/Preston, 6-7 (7-2), 6-2, 6-3; and Pattberg and Jacob Harris lost to Hollis/Johnston, 2-6, 2-6.
In singles, the top four Sulphur Springs seeds won as Moore beat Maples, 8-2; Small knocked off Goode, 8-5; Thompson defeated Hollis in a tiebreaker, 9-8 (7-4); and Pattberg came back to win his match.
Jordan Horne lost to Johnston, 6-8; Cameron Mitchell was beaten by Stiefer, 1-8; and Harris lost to McSpadden, 3-8.
Sulphur Springs' top seeded duo, Cynthia Sanchez and Tara Moore lost a tough, three-set tiebreaker to Tindall/Henell, 6-2, 3-6, 6-7 (7-3); while Lauren Longino and Aly Jackson fell to Tilly/Scarborough, 1-6, 2-6; and Kendall Smith and Morgan McCormack won their doubles match over Murchison/Collum, 6-3, 7-5.
In singles, Sanchez lost to Tindall, 3-8; Moore defeated Tilley, 8-6; Katie Hettich lost to Henell, 3-8; Longino fell to Glasscock, 1-6, 2-6; Smith won her second match over Murchison, 8-2; and Trish Byron lost to Scarborough, 5-8.
In mixed doubles, the SSHS duo of Landon McCaig and Britney Silva lost to Glencock/Stiefer, 4-6, 0-6.
The Meet the Wildcat Marathon is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday at the SSHS courts. For $25, members of the community can play tennis all day with varsity tennis players. Lunch will be provided for the participants as well as prizes being raffled off every hour.
Next Tuesday, the Wildcats will play Mount Pleasant there with matches beginning at 3 p.m. SSHS is currently 1-0 in the four-team district with a final 12-4A match-up with Texas High coming up on Oct. 2.
