Sept. 18, 2004 - ADDISON - One good return deserves another.
For the sixth time this season, the Wildcats' special teams or defense scored a touchdown in Friday's game against W.T. White.
The Sulphur Springs defense has scored three touchdowns and two safeties in the first four games on interception returns by free safety Keenan Clayton and cornerback Brandon Clayton, and a fumble return by Keenan. They have also put up two safeties, both on tackles by middle linebacker Keidric Duffey.
Special teams have added three other touchdowns - a blocked punt return by Brandon Clayton, and senior Keelan Green's punt return and kickoff return.
That's not counting the five returns which have been nullified by illegal blocking penalties.
In Friday's game, Green had 211 combined yards on receptions (4-21), punt returns (5-115) and kick returns (1-75).
Adding Up - Junior running back Chris Person has gone over the 300-yard mark this season after rushing for 85 yards on 14 carries on Friday. He now has 346 yards on 46 carries. ...Quarterback Logan Turner got in his first punt of the season, on a quick kick that carried 51 yards. ...When he caught a flea-flicker pass from Josh Riley, it gave both quarterbacks yardage rushing, receiving and passing in the same game. ...The Wildcats had 18 first downs to 11 for W.T. White.
Catch the Bouncing Ball - One of the most unusual plays of the game happened on a double fumble in the first quarter. Riley ran quarterback keeper from his own 20-yard line to the White 45, but the pigskin came loose and was picked up by WTW's Brad Darnell. He returned it about 15 yards before being tackled and stripped of the ball, which was recovered by Sulphur Springs' Rolaundo Wright at the Wildcat 40. ...Zach Reeves and Zach Attaway trapped White's Johnny Robles at the 3-yard line on a kick return in the third quarter.
Beware of the Sign - W.T. White gets the vote for most distasteful sign. Above where their drill team was sitting in the stands, a hand-made sign said, "Stab Sulphur Springs" with a knife dripping blood. ...Of the 22 combined penalties in the game, 10 of them were major (15 yards).
