Lady Bears improve to 14-1

Sept. 16, 2004 - MILLER GROVE - The Sulphur Bluff Lady Bears improved to 14-1 on the season with a three-game victory over Miller Grove on Tuesday.

The Lady Bears won by scores of 25-10, 25-23, 25-17 as they wind down their non-district schedule. They have matches against Class 2A programs Clarksville on Friday and Lone Oak next week before opening district play Oct. 5.

Against Miller Grove, the Lady Bears were paced by senior middle blocker Ashley Pettit, who recorded seven kills, three blocks, six digs and five aces. Classmate Jill Jaggers added nine assists, four kills, two digs and six aces.

Freshman Elizabeth McDonald had three kills and three digs, while senior Jami Jaye contributed two digs and junior Tara Williams added two digs and three aces. Pettit, Williams, McDonald and Kaylee Phillips all had two dinks.

Cumby def. Como-Pickton

In their final game before district play begins next week, the Cumby Lady Trojans downed Como-Pickton in four games, 25-25, 25-23, 25-8, 25-23.

The Lady Trojans have won seven of their last eight games to improve to 8-4 on the season. The open the district season Tuesday at North Hopkins.

Leading the way for the Lady Trojans was Meagan Strickland with 21 services points, two aces and 10 kills, Erin Templeton with 16 points, one ace and seven kills, and Christina Chambliss with 17 points. Mary Ugalde had 16 points and three aces, and Scarlett Tarno ended with 11 kills.

In the JV contest, Cumby won, 25-19, 25-23, behind Veronica Hogue's 12 points, three aces and two kills. Ashley Herr added 11 points, Amber Hammons nine and Jennifer Herron eight points.
