Wildcat tennis sweeps Greenville
From Staff Reports

Sept. 15, 2004 - The Sulphur Springs tennis team couldn't have put together a better start to their District 12-4A season than they did on Tuesday.

The SSHS boys and girls made a clean sweep of Greenville, 10-0, to begin the four-team district round-robin.

Cody Moore, Brant Small and Ryan Thompson spearheaded the boys' attack, while Cynthia Sanchez and Tara Moore were the top girls players for Sulphur Springs. Coach Susan Reynolds' team responded after playing four different matches last weekend in the Texarkana tournament.

"The kids came out and just flat out played some awesome tennis," said SSHS head coach Susan Reynolds. "We had several players suffering from viruses to soreness from the weekend, but you couldn't tell it today. They came out pumped up and ready to start district play."

Moore and Small teamed up in boys doubles to defeat Greenville's Tim Vinsant and Peter Chung, 6-1, 6-2, then each boy won a tough three-set match in singles.

In girls play, Sanchez and Moore defeated Brittany Williams and Lindsey Williams in doubles play, then won their singles matches in straight sets.

"Brant and Cody had tough matches, but pulled it out through some tough gut play, and the made made it a complete, clean sweep," Reynolds noted.

Moore and Small won their doubles match, 6-1, 6-2, over Vinsant and Chung, while Thompson and partner Luke Panter defeated Greenville's Michael Risely/Baxter McConnell, 6-2, 6-4.

In singles competition, Moore took down long-time rival Vinsant, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, and Small defeated McConnell, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3. Thompson also won his singles match by sweeping Keith Kaden, 6-0, 6-0.

Sanchez and Moore took down the Williams sisters, 6-4, 6-2, to lead a three-match sweep by the SSHS girls. Sulphur Springs' Katie Hettich and Lauren Longino defeated Greenville's Mary Calderilla/Ashlee Garland, 6-0, 6-0, and SSHS' Morgan McCormack and Kendall Smith knocked of Greenville's Ashlee Darst/Jessica Bratt, 6-1, 6-0.

In singles play, Sanchez beat Alex Underhill, 6-0, 6-0, while Moore won over Brittany Williams, 6-0, 6-1.

The SSHS team plays Van on Tuesday, leading up to the Meet The Wildcat Marathon on Saturday, Sept. 25.

After their blanking of Greenville, the team earned a few days of rest, Coach Reynolds said.
