|SSHS tennis preps for start of district|
|From Staff Reports|
Sept. 13, 2004 - TEXARKANA - The Sulphur Springs tennis team took a step up in competition at the Texas High tournament Friday and Saturday, going 1-3 as they prepare to open their district scheduled tomorrow.
SSHS hosts Greenville beginning at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the high school courts.
In the tournament at Texarkana, the Wildcat team lost to Kilgore, Lindale and Frisco before rebounding with a win over Pine Tree.
"Coming into this tournament, I knew the teams would be tough, but I also knew it would do us good to play some very competitive tennis to prepare us for district starting Tuesday," said coach Susan Reynolds. "The kids played a lot of tennis, close matches and different playing styles."
SSHS 10, Pine Tree 3
The doubles' teams came through strong as the boys won all three of their matches and the girls came away with two wins.
In the singles competition, Cody Moore, Brant Small and Paul Pattberg each won, while Tara Moore and Lauren Longino were victorious on the girls side.
Doubles winners were Moore and Small, Ryan Thompson and Luke Panter, and Pattberg and Jacob Harris. On the girls' side, doubles winners were Cynthia Sanchez and Moore, and Morgan McCormack and Kendall Smith.
"Coming away with such a strong win over Pine Tree was tremendous for us because the players were so hungry for a win, and instead of getting down, they stepped it up a notch and beared down for some very impressive tennis and that was my goal for this tournament," Reynolds said. "To accomplish what we have with such a young squad is awesome and now we can play Greenville on Tuesday, our first district match, on a high note."
Kilgore 10, SSHS 1
The boys doubles team of Pattberg and Harris produced an SSHS win, but Kilgore made it a rough opening match for the rest of the Wildcat team.
"Going into this tournament, we knew we would meet some tough team, and the first match with Kilgore was no exception," Reynolds said. "They've built up to be a very competitive team over the past couple of years. Our kids came out a little sluggish, and Kilgore jumped on that in the doubles and we couldn't recover in the singles."
Lindale 10, SSHS 0
The Wildcats lost to one of the strongest Class 3A programs in the state, but Reynolds said SSHS was "leading in several singles matches and had several close matches going" when Lindale hit the 10-point mark.
"We've known all along Lindale would be strong not only individually but team-wise," she explained. "They have several players with a lot of ZAT tournament experience, and that makes a huge difference."
Frisco 10, SSHS 3
Cody Moore and Panthers each won in singles competition, while Tara Moore won individually and teamed up with Sanchez for a victory in the girls doubles bracket.
"Playing a team like Frisco was really a challenge for our kids, but they stepped up and gave 100 percent," Reynolds said. "They had several emotional matches because the kids wanted to win so bad, and the scores showed that. Again, we had several matches that were in progress that were close when we hit the 10-point mark."
