Cumby beaten by No. 4 Savoy; Lady Bears win two

Sept. 13, 2004 - GREENVILLE - The Cumby Lady Trojan volleyball team lost to the No. 4-ranked team in the state in Savoy during the championship game of the Greenville Christian tournament 16-25, 23-25, 22-25 on Saturday.

With the loss, coach Ron Hogue's team is now 7-4 on the year, while Savoy has only one loss on the season coming against Cumby earlier in the season at Savoy.

"I think our girls are playing very well right at this time, and we are looking forward to starting district," Hogue said.

Meagan Strickland and Christina Chambliss received All-Tournament honors helping the team place first in pool play and second overall during the tournament.

During Cumby's five matches in the tournament, Chambliss recorded 61 points for the Lady Trojans, while Strickland recorded 55 points.

Sulphur Bluff def. Como-Pickton and North Hopkins

The Sulphur Bluff Lady Bears defeated the Lady Eagles in three games 25-16, 25-16, 25-17 Tuesday night at home.

Ashley Pettit led the way with five aces, seven kills and four digs, while Tara Williams added five aces and two digs. Jennifer McDonald had seven kills and one dig, while Kaylee Phillips had four aces.

In the win against North Hopkins, the Lady Bears went to four games with a 20-25, 25-20, 25-20, 25-15 win as Pettit had 13 kills, three aces, seven digs and one block.

Jill Jaggers had four aces, 14 assists and a dig, along with two blocks and six kills for McDonald in the match.
