White Oak hands Rains tough loss

Sept. 11, 2004 - EMORY - Mistakes proved to be too costly as the Rains Wildcats fell to the White Oak Roughnecks 28-18 in the Wildcats' home opener Friday night. The loss drops the Wildcats to 1-1 while White Oak improves to 3-0 for the season.

The game was much closer than the score indicated, as White Oak didn't seal the win until the final period.

White Oak took the early lead on a 6-yard touchdown pass from Nathan Skeen to Scott Copeland to give the Roughnecks a 7-0 lead.

Rains responded with a 12-play scoring drive that was capped by a 2-yard plunge by Tyler Jones. The point-after kick failed, though, leaving a 7-6 score.

White Oak extended their lead shortly afterward as Tyler Simmons broke through the Wildcat defense and raced 61 yards for a touchdown. Simmons added his second PAT to make the score 14-6 with 10 minutes remaining in the half.

Rains was in danger of having no response to the White Oak score on their next possession. However, on fourth-and-1 from the White Oak 42-yard line, Jones escaped around right end and raced the distance for his second touchdown of the night.

The Wildcats' try for a two-point conversion failed leaving a 14-12 score.

White Oak extended their lead when Devoldrick Coleman scored on a 37-yard touchdown run. Eric Wait, replacing an injured Simmons, added the PAT to make the score 21-12 at the half.

A 13-play scoring drive late in the third quarter enabled the Wildcats to narrow the deficit.

Jones' pass to L.N. White for 37 yards put Rains at the White Oak doorstep. Anthony Lewis capped the drive with a 1-yard dive into the end zone to make the score 21-18.

The Wildcats' hopes of pulling off the win was dashed when, on fourth-and-4 from the Rains 14, Skeen connected with Copeland in the end zone for their second touchdown of the night and the final margin of victory.

White Oak's Coleman led all rushers with 157 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries for the night. Skeen finished with five completions on 11 attempts for 97 yards and two touchdowns and one interception.

Jones led Rains with 111 yards and two touchdowns rushing. The Wildcat quarterback also finished with four completions on eight attempts for 82 yards.

Friday night Rains travels to Farmersville to face the Fighting Farmers.
