Person sets one school mark, Green ties another

Sept. 4, 2004 - As one of the perks of a 42-0 win, the Wildcats set one school record and tied another Friday night.

Chris Person's 97-yard TD run with 11:41 to play in the fourth quarter was the longest play from scrimmage in SSHS history.

It edged out the 96-yard touchdown pass from Ryan Henry to Keenan Clayton in last season's bi-district game against Highland Park. That connection still remains the longest pass play in SSHS annals.

The longest run previously was 92 yards by Jay Clayton against Texas High in 1998.

Keelan Green tied a school record with his 90-yard punt return for a touchdown with 5:12 remaining in the first half. He shares the mark with David Gulley, who went the same distance against Lewisville in 1967.

Look Behind You - Had a clipping penalty not wiped out Keenan Clayton's punt return for a TD last week, the Wildcats would have two this season. A silly penalty also wiped out another Clayton score this week, when he appeared to score from over 50 yards out in the first quarter. But, when Clayton was just a few steps from the goal line, a wide receiver blocked a defensive back from behind more than 10 yards behind the play. The Wildcats had to settle for a field goal. ...Leading tacklers on special teams were John Hall, Robert Finnie, Zach Reeves and Jake Broumley. ...The Wildcats were penalized nine times for 81 yards, while Forney was flagged six times for 29 yards.

Dee-Fence, Dee-Fence - The Wildcats are adapting well to the 4-4 defense installed this season. It especially gives linebackers David Barnes and Keidric Duffey and free safety Keenan Clayton freedom to make plays. "I like it a lot better," Clayton said. "Compared to last year, I can see the field a lot better. Really, I think we played the pass more, and this year, we play the run more. I think once we get to district, and we're in good shape and can play all night, I'll think we'll be pretty good." ..Quarterbacks Logan Turner and Josh Riley continued to alternate, but this game, if one of them led the team to a score, they stayed in for the next series. ...David Barnes had the best form tackle of the game, meeting Forney running back Larry Williams in the middle of the line in the second period and dropping him for a 1-yard loss.

Losing Ground - Of Forney's 31 offensive plays in the first half, 17 of them went for either no gain or loss of yardage. ...Junior kicker Spenser Daniel has three field goals in two games. The school record for the season is eight, shared by Scooter Howard (1995) and Billy Watkins (1989).
