|From Staff Reports|
Sept. 3, 2004 - FORNEY - The Sulphur Springs junior varsity evened its record at 1-1 with a 13-6 win over Forney Thursday night.
The Wildcats scored touchdowns late in each half to account for their points in the defensively-minded game.
The contest was scoreless until shortly before halftime until Wildcat quarterback B.J. Rogers connected with Brad Aleron on a 38-yard touchdown strike. The extra point failed, but Sulphur Springs went into halftime with a 6-0 lead.
The Jackrabbits tied the score early in the fourth period, but the Wildcats would answer back later in the quarter.
A botched punt gave the Wildcats the ball near midfield late in the game. A plays later, Colby Mills scampered down the left sideline for a 45-yard gain down to the 1-yard-line. Stephan Petty got the scoring call on the next play, and Bryan Ballard's PAT kick was good to give Sulphur Springs a 13-6 lead.
A forced fumble on the next drive gave the Wildcats the ball back with 41 seconds remaining, securing the victory.
"Defensively, we played real well," said coach Carl Hornback. "Colt Hooten, Orion Runyan, Josh Pierce and that whole crew up front were awesome. They kept us in the game.
"Offensively, we struggled. We would get something going, and then miss a block or misread coverage or misfire a snap. We just kept shooting ourselves in the foot."
