Hollenshead wins fourth cross country meet

Oct. 18, 2004 - ARLINGTON - With a late burst of speed, North Hopkins senior Kate Hollenshead won her fourth meet of the year on Saturday at the Ken Gaston Invitational at Vandergriff Park.

Running in the Class 1A-4A division, Hollenshead and sophomore Sabra Thomas, who finished fifth overall, paced the Lady Panthers to a second-place finish behind Cleburne.

Hollenshead, who finished second at the state cross country meet last year and fifth in the 800 meters at the state track meet, passed three runners in the final 100 yards to win the gold medal in a time of 12 minutes, 4 seconds over the two-mile course.

Thomas, who was also a member of the NH state championship cross country team last year, came in fifth in a time of 12:21.

She was followed by freshman Jessi Mannis in 20th place in a time of 13:04, sophomore Ebbonye Johnson in 40th in 13:25 and Rosa Fuentes in 43rd in 13:26. Sara Weir finished in 14:22.

North Hopkins finished with 109 points, beating out Class 4A teams like McKinney North, Frisco and Crowley.

The JV girls were fifth, as Cayla Newkirk led the team with a 17th-place individual finish in a time of 14:37. Leia Butler was 18th in 14:39, followed a second behind by Kara Mannis in 19th place. Megan Lehr ran a 15:48 and Hannah Martel a 16:12. Katy Williams did not run due to an ankle sprain.
