Oct. 18, 2004 - BIRTHRIGHT - The North Hopkins Lady Panthers moved within one game of wrapping up a volleyball playoff berth with a three-game win over Miller Grove on Friday.
The Lady Panthers improved to 7-0 in District 19-A, 16-8 overall with the 25-17, 25-5, 26-24 victory. Miller Grove fell to 2-5.
North Hopkins has a one-game lead over Quinlan Boles and a three-game advantage over third-place Cumby with three games to play. The top two teams from each district in Class A advance to the playoffs.
On Friday, senior Sara Weir had 16 service points, including six aces, to go along with two kills and two digs for the NH. Junior Katy Williams added six kills, two blocks and seven points, and sophomore Ebbonye Johnson recorded five kills, five digs, two blocks and six points.
Maegan Baxter had a team-high 15 assists and 14 points for NHHS, Tashona Berry added five kills and five digs, Ashley Wilson contributed six digs and five points, and Patricia Reed recorded four digs.
Miller Grove was led by BriAnne Bailey's nine service points, nine digs and three kills, and Hayli Gannon's 12 digs, two points and three assists. Jaime Hayes contributed four points, two digs and a kill, while Samantha Petty had a team-high five assists to go with four digs and a two points.
Callie Smith had a three kills, three digs and three points for MG, while Natalie Bailey added five digs, two points, an assist and a kill.
"North Hopkins is a good team, and we wish them luck in the playoffs," said Miller Grove coach Sara Garmon.
North Hopkins hosts Fruitvale on Tuesday with a chance to wrap up a playoff berth, while Miller Grove takes on Quinlan Boles.
Sulphur Bluff def. James Bowie
SIMMS - Ashley Pettit combined 12 kills with four dinks, eight digs and a block to lead Sulphur Bluff past James Bowie, 25-22, 25-22, 25-16.
The Lady Bears improved to 20-1 overall, 4-0 in District 18-A, with a match set for Tuesday in Detroit against the Lady Eagles. A win on Tuesday would secure a playoff berth for Sulphur Bluff.
On Friday, senior Jill Jaggers recorded a team-high six assists to go with four digs and two aces, junior Jennifer McDonald added seven kills, 10 digs and one block, and junior Tara Williams had nine digs, one assist and an ace for the Lady Bears. Senior Jami Jaye added nine digs, Courtney Mitchell had two digs and Kaylee Phillips recorded six digs and a kill.
