Sulphur Bluff, Miller Grove notch district wins

Oct. 13, 2004 - Sulphur Bluff and Miller Grove both notched victories over district opponents on Tuesday.

Sulphur Bluff def. Avery

AVERY - The Sulphur Bluff Lady Bears grabbed control of District 18-A Tuesday night with a four-game victory over Avery, sending the Lady Bulldogs to their first district loss.

Sulphur Bluff improved to 19-1 overall, 3-0 in district with the 25-22, 18-25, 25-18, 25-17 victory that wrapped up the first round of play in the four-team conference.

Senior Ashley Pettit led the way for the Lady Bears with a 25-kill, two-block, two-dig effort. Junior Jennifer McDonald added 11 kills, 11 digs and three dinks. Senior Jill Jaggers had a team-high nine assists to go with four digs and an ace, and senior Jami Jaye recorded a team-best two aces and three assists and three digs.

Junior Tara Williams contributed 10 digs and Kaylee Phillips eight. Senior Courtney Mitchell added five assists and three digs.

Coach Jarrett Wilson's Lady Bears continue district action at 5 p.m. Friday at Simms James Bowie.

Miller Grove def. Yantis

MILLER GROVE - BriAnne Bailey had a team-high nine kills and 14 service points to go along with five digs and seven dinks to lead Miller Grove to a four-game victory.

The Lady Hornets improved to 2-4 in District 19-A with the 25-18, 12-25, 25-16, 25-20 win.

Miller Grove received solid play from their starters with Samantha Petty notching a team-high 26 assists to go with nine points and four digs, Jaime Hayes added nine points, two digs and a kill, and Hayli Gannon contributed a team-high nine digs to go with eight service points and five assists.

Natalie Bailey added six points, four digs and seven kills, while Callie Smith recorded six kills, three assists, two blocks, three digs and three points.

"This was a good win for us," said MG coach Sara Garmon. "I was pleased with all the girls' performances. They all contributed to this win."

The Lady Hornets host district-leading North Hopkins on Friday.
