Wills Points takes match from depleted SSHS tennis squad
From Staff Reports

Oct. 7, 2004 - Playing in an unusual format with more mixed doubles teams than boys doubles because of injuries, the Sulphur Springs tennis team dropped a head-to-head match-up with Wills Point on Tuesday, 11-5.

The SSHS boys doubles team of Cody Moore and Brant Small won their match, and the Wildcats took three of four singles matches, but Tara Moore and Lauren Longino were the only Lady Cat winners.

SSHS coach Susan Reynolds said injuries are still a factor, but she sees some other mistakes that need fixing before the regional tennis tournament Oct. 29-30 in Grapevine.

"We were playing without my mixed doubles team and two other hurt players, so I still do not have a full squad, and the jumbled lineup was definitely a factor again," she said. "Wills Point is a solid team and they gave us some good, solid tennis, but we just couldn't get our rhythm going.

"I'm not happy with some of the errors I've been seeing, and that's something we'll address in practice, and getting two of my players back next week will help for sure."

The Wildcats will next play Oct. 23 in a tri-match with Van and Wills Point at their respective sites. That will be a tune-up for the regional meet.

On Tuesday, the SSHS boys had a good outing. Moore and Small not only beat Wills Point's D. Kinney/A. Kinney, 6-2, 6-1, the boys won three of four singles matches, and the only loss went three games.

Wills Point took all three doubles matches on the girls side, and four of the six singles contests. Wills Point also won both mixed doubles matches.
