SSHS tennis settles for second place
From Staff Reports

Oct. 4, 2004 - MOUNT PLEASANT - Beset by injuries and playing a tough Texas High squad, the Sulphur Springs tennis team finished up District 14-2A play in second place after Saturday's match with the Tigers.

Texas High compiled a 19-0 match record against the Wildcats, who had already qualified for the regional tennis tournament in Grapevine on Oct. 29-30.

Saturday, coach Susan Reynolds had to juggle her lineup after Luke Panter was unable to play due to a staff infection, Paul Pattberg re-injured his lower back and Brant Small's knee gave him problems.

"I had to rearrange the doubles, which is tough when you've had set teams for the entire season," Coach Reynolds said. "We were definitely the walking wounded."

Texas High, which won the district championship, also qualified for the regional team tennis tournament.

"Texas High was not as strong as I expected, even though the score does not show it," Reynolds said. "Our kids played some excellent tennis, but fundamental errors and mental miscues really hurt us in the long run. Several matches had some long rallies, and there were points that I was impressed with, but we need to work on consistency and putting our points away when we have the chance.

"I'm proud of the kids and how hard they've worked and now we have another goal to achieve and that's giving a strong showing a regionals. We have three weeks to recover and work on some things, and I have no doubt we'll be ready."

In their next action, the Wildcats will host Wills Point in a non-district match at 3:45 p.m. Tuesday.
