In key match-up, NH girls edge Saltillo

Nov. 23, 2004 - SALTILLO - In one of the key non-district match-ups of the Hopkins County basketball season, the North Hopkins Lady Panthers kept their record spotless at 3-0 with a 48-44 win over Saltillo Monday night.

Senior guard Sara Weir led the Lady Panthers (3-0) with a game-high 18 points, three boards and two assists, and sophomore point guard Ebbonye Johnson added 13 points, four rebounds, two assists and four steals in the win.

NH junior Katy Williams almost had her third double-double of the season with nine points and 14 rebounds. Kate Hollenshead had two points and eight rebounds for the Lady Panthers.

Saltillo, coming off a tournament championship, was led in scoring by sophomore Chloe Roberts with nine points, and freshman Winter Stevens added eight points in the loss.

YANTIS - The Fruitvale Lady Bobcats pulled out a nail-biting 41-38 win over the Yantis Lady Owls Monday night.

Tied at 15-15 at the half, Fruitvale outscored Yantis 26-21 in the second half to pull out the victory.

Yantis was led by Sarah Collins with 13, and Robbin Allen with 12 points in the loss.

Fruitvale had two players in double figures with Barney scoring a game-high 15 points.

COMMERCE - Two players scored in double figures for the North Hopkins junior varsity as they advanced to the championship round of the Commerce JV tournament Saturday .

Jessi Mannis scored 17 points and Cayla Newkirk added 12 points.

Lone Oak was led by Brookins with eight points and Fletcher with six points.

COMMERCE - In the final game of the tournament, the host team Commerce pulled out the victory.

North Hopkins was led by Jessi Mannis with seven points and Angelina Ugalde with five points.

Commerce was led in scoring by Turner with a game-high 10 points.

SALTILLO - The North Hopkins Panthers improved to 3-2 on the season with the 17-point win over Saltillo on Monday night.

Kevin Campbell led the way for North Hopkins with 18 points and four rebounds, while teammate Cordaro Johnson pumped in 12 points and two rebounds in the win.

North Hopkins (3-2) will play Roxton at home today with the junior varsity boys scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.

Saltillo had a team-high 12 points from Micah Payne, while brother Miles added nine points in the loss.

North Hopkins held a 24-23 lead at the half and outscored Saltillo 28-12 in the second half of play.

YANTIS - Colby Ogle pumped in 13 points and teammate Cory Elliott scored 12 points for Yantis as the Owls improved to 4-1.

Yantis (4-1) will play Miller Grove tonight at home with junior varsity girls action starting at 4:30 p.m.

Jeremy Hurley added nine points and Jarrett Russell five for the Owls..

The Bobcats (2-1) were led in scoring by White with 11.

Christopher Thompson and Jarrod Brown led the team with 10 points each, and teammate T.J. Moreland added eight points for the Owls.
