King, Akerhielm both place at Big 12 meet

May 4, 2004 -- Distance runners Kyle King of Baylor and Tracie Akerhielm of Texas Tech each earned points for their respective schools at the Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championships last weekend at the University of Oklahoma.

King, a senior from Sulphur Springs, placed second in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 14:25.75, earning him All-Big 12 honors. King was previously named all-conference and All-American in indoor track.

In the outdoor race on Friday, he placed behind Colorado's Dathan Ritzenhein, who won the race in 14:08.40. King will be running May 28-29 at the Midwest Regional Championships in College Station.

He was earlier named Academic All-Big 12, an honor also earned by Akerhielm, who has a 4.0 GPA.

Akerhielm, a senior from North Hopkins, took sixth at the conference meet in the 10,000-meter run on Thursday in a time of 36:36.02, then came back on Saturday to run the 5,000 meters, finishing 13th in 17:23.49.

She has also qualified for the Midwest Regionals in the 5K, having clocked a 16:55.50 two weeks ago at the Mt. Sac Relays.
