Legging It Out: Two SSHS runners going all the way to Austin
Bobby "Butch" Burney | News-Telegram Sports Editor

May 3, 2004 -- DENTON -- One hundred meters in the distance of a straight-away on an outdoor track. But, for Keelan Green and Kendall wright, that distance will take them all the way to Austin.

Green took second in the the 100-meter dash and Wright was a silver medalist in the 110-meter high hurdles Saturday at the Class 4A, Region II track and field meet, qualifying them both for the UIL state meet, May 14-15 at Mike Meyers Stadium in Austin.

Both runners went into the regional meet with some of the best qualifying times. Then, they lived up to that billing.

Overall, Sulphur Springs scored 20 points, tying the Wildcats for 10th in the team standings.

On the girls' side, sophomore Bridgette Nash set a personal best in the shot put, finishing third and earning a state alternate berth.

An unseasonable cold front that delayed the meet on Friday, brought low temperatures and a strong, swirling wind at Fouts Field at the University of North Texas on Saturday, keeping runners from marking their best times.

100-Meter Dash

A month ago, Green wasn't even running the 100. He was specializing in the 200 and running on both the 4x100 and 4x200 relays. Then, coach Robert Wallace put him in the premiere sprint event just to see what he could do.

During that time, he has produced a school record clocking (10.52) and a state berth.

On Saturday, Green was the last runner out of the blocks, and at 20 meters, he was still trailing everyone else. He started making his move at about 40 meters, had moved up to fifth place at 50 meters and started reeling in everyone else in the field except for champion Bradley Reed of Greenville.

Reed clocked a 10.49, Green was second in 10.75 and Courtney Thomas of Kilgore placed third in 10.80.

"I kind of held in the blocks too long because I didn't want to false start," Green said afterwards. "That's where I messed up, so I just had to try to catch everybody else. I came out last in the blocks.

"It took me a while to build up my speed. Once I got to my top speed, I tried to hold it."

Last year, Green's fastest time was an 11.2, but he has clipped 7/10ths of a second off that this year.

"They just threw me in it. I'm glad they did," Green said. "I didn't really know what I could run. All summer long, I ran, lifted weights and worked on my legs to get faster."

Green also ran anchor leg on the Wildcats' 4x100-meter relay team which placed seventh in 43.46, almost a second-and-half off their school-record time. Also running on the relay was Jonathan Hall, Jermaine Wright and Keenan Clayton.

Hurdles

Wright competed in both the 110-high hurdles and the 300-meter intermediates. He really shined in the shorter race.

Unlike Green, Wright got a great start and was leading the race through the first three hurdles. He nicked the fourth barrier, allowing Henderson's Chad Leath to gain ground. The pair battled neck-and-neck over the last half of the race, finishing in the exact time, 14.47 seconds.

In a photo finish, Leath won on a lean at the tape.

"I was in the lead until I hit the fourth hurdle, I think, and they caught up with me," Wright said. "The cold weather made my legs dead. I gave it all I had, though. I ran as hard as I could."

In the 300 hurdles, Wright drew Lane 1, but ran a strong race through the first five hurdles. He finished in fifth place, with a time of 40.11.

Shot Put

Nash set a personal best with a toss of 39 feet, 3 inches to claim third place. She will be an alternate to the state meet.

The event was won by Red Oak's D'Andra Carter, the daughter of state record holder Michael Carter, with a throw of 43-5. Her teammate, Deanna Smith, was second at 39-7 1/4.

Coach Carin Hoffman said Nash continued to get better throughout the season.

"She threw her best at the biggest meet in her life, and she's just a sophomore," Hoffman said. "This is something for her to build on."

Senior Sara Barrett also competed in the high jump, clearing 5-0, but did not place. It was Barrett's third consecutive time to qualify for the regional meet.

Class 4A, Region II results

Saturday's results from the Class 4A, Region II track and field championships at Fouts Field. Top two finishers in each event advance to the UIL State Track and Field Championships May 14-15 at the University of Texas in Austin.
