Moore wins third tournament of spring

March 27, 2004 -- Sulphur Springs' Cody Moore swept to his third singles title of the spring Tuesday, losing just one set in three matches, in the Sulphur Springs Tournament.

Moore beat Greenville's Tim Vinsant 6-2, 6-2 in the championship match for the second time this season.

On the way to the title match, he defeated Terrell's Sam Nix, 6-0, 6-1, then dispatched Paris' Trace Cochran, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4.

The doubles team of Brant Small and Luke Panter also won the tournament doubles championship by coming back from an opening-set loss to defeat the Terrell tandem of Scott Moore and Jason McCoy, 5-7, 6-3, 6-3. Small and Panter also defeated Greenville's Joel Powell and Keith Kaden, 6-3, 6-4, and the Paris duo of Brattli/Williams, 6-1, 6-1, in the opening round.

The SSHS pair of Paul Pattberg and Tyler Law fell to Powell/Kaden in the match for third place, 6-3, 6-2. Pattberg/Law beat Paris' Tabangcora/Jewett by scores of 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 in the opening round before falling to Moore/McCoy, 6-1, 6-0, in the semifinals.

Landon McCaig and Marshall Hoybook made it to the consolation final before losing to Greenville's Henderson/Wallace, 6-3, 6-4. McCaig/Hoybook beat Brattli/Williams, 6-2, 6-2, after falling in the first round to Powell/Kaden, 6-3, 6-1.

In boys singles, Ryan Thompson advanced to the third-place game after defeating Paris' G.T. Elliott in the first round, 6-2, 6-1, and falling to Vinsant, 6-0, 6-0, in the second round. Cochran beat Thompson, 6-2, 6-2, for third.

Miguel Ortiz of Sulphur Springs won the consolation title by beating Paris' Elliott and Terrell's Sam Nix.

In girls doubles, Laura Russell and Larissa Knotts won third by defeating Greenville's Jenny Miller and Brittney Williams, 8-1. They had previously beaten the Greenville duo of Bobbie McKay and Lindsey Williams, 6-1, 6-1, before falling to Terrell's Halee Belz and Jessica Daniel, 6-2, 6-3.

Sulphur Springs' Alyssa Armstrong and Crystal Figueroa won the consolation title by defeating McKay/Williams, 8-0. They also beat Paris' Williams/Rhodes, 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 before losing to Terrell's Tara Flowers and Lesley Steele, 6-3, 6-1.

Four girls did well for Sulphur Springs in the singles bracket.

SSHS' Cynthia Sanchez took second place, falling to Greenville's Rachel Vinsant in the title game, 6-0, 6-0. Sanchez reached the championship match by beating Berger, 6-0, 6-3, and Underhill, 6-1, 6-0.

Anja Sturzl of Sulphur Springs took third in a 6-1, 6-1 match over Berger. Sturzl beat Smotherman in the opening round, 6-0, 6-0, but Vinsant prevailed in the second round, 6-1, 6-0.

Emily Holland won the consolation title, beating teammate Meredith Massey, 6-0, 6-0. Holland got there by beating Greenville's Alex Underhill, 6-0, 6-2, after losing to Paris' Annika Berger, 7-6, 6-0.

Massey reached the consolation final by beating Stephanie Smotherman of Paris, 6-4, 6-0, after falling to Greenville's Rachel Vinsant, 6-0, 6-1.
