TITLE WAVE: SSHS soccer girls claim district championship
From Staff Reports

March 12, 2004 -- PARIS -- Ashley Petty used her head, as she directed a Tess Bragg corner kick for her 23rd goal of the season, and Yorri Franklin got her second straight shutout in goal to lift Sulphur Springs to its first district championship with a 1-0 win over Paris Friday night.

Petty's goal came at the 30-minute mark of the first half, and Franklin made 10 saves for the visiting Lady Wildcats (5-1-1) who have 17 points and will beat second-place North Lamar by at least one point even with a loss tonight in their home finale against Texas High.

SSHS did its part earlier in the year by sweeping the Lady Panthers and would have won any tiebreakers due to head-to-head competition.

Things got scary in the second half on Friday, as Franklin tipped a Paris shot that struck the crossbar and laid on the ground for three seconds before the senior corralled it. The referee ruled the ball didn't cross the line.

The only team with anything on the line tonight is Texas High, as a win would tie the Lady Tigers with Mount Pleasant for the third playoff spot and force the tiebreakers to be used. MPHS upset North Lamar to help SSHS clinch the District 14-4A crown.

With the district title comes a first-round bye in the playoffs for Coach J.J. Williams' squad.

The regular season finale for the varsity is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. today at Gerald Prim Stadium. There is no JV game scheduled.
