Moore wins second spring tournament

March 12, 2004 -- Sulphur Springs' Cody Moore captured his second individual tournament title of the spring Tuesday in the tournament hosted by SSHS.

Sulphur Springs had two others win the consolation bracket and two more finish third in the four-team tourney.

Moore won the boys single title, winning all three matches he played. He started with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Jerrod Inman of Mount Vernon, then beat Greenville's Tim Vinsant, 7-5, 6-3, before holding off Jordan Cohen of All Saints, 6-1, 3-6, 7-5, in the final round.

Also in the boys singles, SSHS' Ryan Thompson finished third, beating Vinsant, 8-1, in the final match. Thompson opened the tournament with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Mount Vernon's Jason Burkett, before being knocked off by Cohen, 6-4, 6-3.

In the boys doubles bracket, Sulphur Springs' Paul Pattberg and Tyler Law won the consolation bracket by beating Greenville's Peter Chung and Kacy Wallace, 6-2, 6-1. They defeated teammates Landon McCaig and Marshall Hoybook, 7-6, 7-5 (7-3) in the consolation semifinal after losing to Greenville's Joel Powell and Keith Kaden, 6-4, 6-4, in the first round.

McCaig and Hoybook overcame their loss to beat Mount Vernon's James Clay and David Mane, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) in the consolation third-place game.

Brant Small and Luke Panter finished second in the doubles bracket, falling to Jake Adams and Phillip Shoemaker of All Saints, 7-5, 0-6, 6-3. Smaller and Panter had beat Chung/Wallace in the first round, 7-6 (8-6), 6-0, then dispatched the All Saints team of Will Robertson and Haren Patel, 6-1, 6-2.

In the girls single bracket, Cynthia Sanchez finished third by beating teammate Anja Sturzl, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) in the final game. Sanchez beat Greenville's Alex Underhill, 6-0, 6-1, in the opening round before falling to 2002 state runner-up Giovanna Arrondo of Mount Vernon, 6-1, 6-1. Sturzl beat All Saints' Catie Arnold, 6-2, 1-6, 6-4, in the opening round.

Sulphur Springs had four teams in the girls doubles division, with Amanda Darden and Katie Hettich winning the consolation bracket, 6-0, 6-2 over Greenville's Jenny Miller and Brittney Williams. Darden and Hettich also beat Greenville's Bobbie McKay and Lindsay Williams, 6-0, 6-2, after losing in the opening round to Jean Simmons and Claire Saunders of All Saints, 6-1, 6-1.

The duo of Alyssa Armstrong and Crystal Figueroa made it to the semifinal round before losing to Simmons/Saunders, 6-0, 6-1. Armstrong and Figueroa beat Miller/Williams, 6-2, 6-0, but then lost to Frances Smith and Kathryn Lake of All Saints, 6-1, 6-2.

Laura Russell and Larissa Knotts also made it to the semifinals before losing to Simmons/Saunders, 6-0, 6-1.
