Cumby, NH win district openers

March 12, 2004 -- MILLER GROVE -- Chris Romans broke a one-run game open with a two-run double in the sixth, while Mika Robertson tossed a complete game to lift Cumby to an 7-3 win over Miller Grove in the district opener for both teams.

Romans finished 3-for-3 at the plate, while Robertson (2-0) gave up seven hits and three runs with one walk and 11 strikeouts after surviving a tough first inning in which the Hornets scored all three of their runs on four hits.

Brandon Brown went 3-for-4, and Robertson added a hit in two at-bats for the Trojans (3-2, 1-0 District 14A), who host Bland at 4 p.m. Friday.

North Hopkins 12, Roxton 1

BIRTHRIGHT -- Roy Warren went 3-for-3 with three RBIs, Sean Wilson finished 2-for-4 and Heath Abbott added a two-run hit, as North Hopkins scored four runs in the first inning and never looked back in a 12-1 win over Roxton in the district opener for both teams.

Chad Darlin went 2-for-4, including a two-run homer in a three-run fourth inning, Micah Walker had an RBI hit while Steven Crocker, Colton Golightly and Adrian Ramirez each added hits for the Panthers (4-2, 1-0 District), who played their third consecutive game without an error.

Warren got the win, striking out four in two innings of work. Jake Cockrum, Josh McPherson and Walker each threw an inning of relief with two strikeouts. NHHS plays Mount Vernon Thursday morning at Celeste in the Leonard Tournament.
