July 7, 2004 -- Tuesday night was a National League vs. American League showdown in Hopkins County in the 11-12 year old Dixie Youth Baseball Majors double-elimination tournament.

The National League Hurricanes, behind a home run from Donnie Rodriguez and clutch hitting from the bottom of the lineup, walked out of Coleman Park with a 3-1 win over the American League Longhorns.

"We needed this win. We told the kids after the loss Monday night that we were in a dogfight, and we were the big dogs tonight," Coach Mike Garrison said.

The Longhorns won the first game between the two teams 3-2 Saturday night at Coleman Park.

The Hurricanes will play Thursday night against the winner of the Mount Vernon-Terrell contest at Coleman Park tonight at 6 p.m. First pitch of Thursday's game is scheduled for 8 p.m.

If Terrell wins the game, the two teams of tonight's game will flip to see who advances to play Hopkins County National in game eight of the tournament.

"I think it would be better if we didn't know who we were going to play because this Hopkins County team knew us way too well tonight," Garrison said.

With the loss, coach Shawn Carpenter's Longhorns were eliminated from double-elimination tournament after losing their first game to Terrell Monday night.

Jake Dougan took the win on the mound for the Hurricanes going five innings, giving up two hits and striking out five. He also walked one batter in the game.

Cody Carnes took the loss for the Longhorns pitching a complete game four-hitter. He also struck out four and walked three batters in the game.

The National League scored their final two runs in the top of the sixth inning when Lorenzo Rivera smacked a triple off of Carnes to score Lemarcus Kendricks from second base for the 2-0 lead.

Jaspen DeBase then drove in Rivera from third base on a sacrifice hit for the Hurricanes and a 3-0 lead.

In the bottom of the inning, Longhorn first baseman Seth Roberts scored from third on an error by Hurricanes catcher Austin Garrison to cut the deficit to 3-1. Roberts went 1-for-2 in the game with a stolen base and a run scored.

Garrison went 1-for-3 with a single and three stolen bases for the Hurricanes, while Rodriguez was 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored. The home run was his first of the tournament and the third for the team. Mason Morton has the other two home runs for the Hurricanes.

Cayle Watson went 1-for-2 along with Jake Spataro and Carnes for the Longhorns.

The Longhorns also went 7-for-8 in stolen base attempts, while the Hurricanes were 5-for-5 in the game.
