Cats take first in initial meet
From Staff Reports

January 26, 2004 -- LONE OAK -- The Sulphur Springs powerlifting team outmuscled their competition Saturday, winning the Lone Oak Invitational behind four first-place finishes.

Senior Leo Wisniewski, who won state in the 220-pound class last year, moved up by 50 pounds in weight classification but still came away a winner.

Also taking first was senior Aaron Boles in the super heavyweight, senior Brandon Skelton in the 165-pound class and freshman Bill Pryor in the 114-pound division.

Others who placed in the top 5 in their weight group and scored points for the Wildcats were senior Henry Preuss, fourth in the 242 class; senior Cody Bain and junior Keenan Clayton, fourth and fifth in the 198-pound class; Keidric Duffey, second in 181 division; and James Sawyer, fourth in the 165-pound group.

The Wildcats took 36 competitors, making up three teams to the meet. The A team edged Greenville by one point for the team championship.

"It was a total team effort," said head coach Dean Lasseter. "In powerlifting, you lift against kids your own size, so if everybody takes care of business and scores points, you've got a good chance to win, and that's what happened.

"It's good to beat Greenville because they're always good in powerlifting, they have a lot of tradition."

Wisniewski had the highest total of the three lifts (squat, bench press, dead lift) with 1,450 pounds. He successfully lifted 575 in the squat, 370 in the bench and 505 in the dead lift. Boles had a 1,260 total, Skelton a 1,245, and Pryor a 715.

"Those guys did a great job," Lasseter said. "We needed every point we earned, so it was a total team effort."

Wildcat fans can watch the team locally on Saturday when they host a meet, beginning at 9 a.m. in the SSHS gymnasium. About 24 teams are expected to compete. Medals will be given individually for first through fifth place, and team trophies for first through third.
