Lady Cats drop first district match
From Staff Reports

Feb. 20, 2004 -- No one knows whether or not Sulphur Springs was looking ahead to tonight's District 14-4A contest at Texas High, but the Lady Wildcat soccer team found out Thursday it has a bullseye on its back and better come to play every night.

Mount Pleasant (5-10, 1-2) lost its first two district contests but didn't seem to be intimidated by SSHS. Junior center/forward Sandra Aguilar scored her second of two goals midway through the second half as Mount Pleasant took a 2-1 win at Gerald Prim Stadium in a game originally scheduled for Saturday afternoon.

"It was a tough ballgame, and Mount Pleasant came in here to win," Lady Wildcat head coach J.J. Williams said. "Things didn't work out for us in the end, and we were missing one of our key leaders on the field. I think the girls were down about that."

He was referring to senior Yorri Franklin, who suffered an ankle injury and could not continue playing. Her status for tonight is doubtful.

The game was scoreless until the 36:44 mark of the second half, when junior Ashley Petty scored her 20th goal of the season off a penalty kick.

Aguilar tied the game a minute later off an assist from Christina Sandoval. Kayda Alvarado assisted on the game winner, while junior goalkeeper Stephanie Thomas stopped eight of nine shots in goal.

The Lady Tigers had only three shots on goal in the second half but capitalized on two of them. They outshot SSHS (9-7, 2-1) 13-9 for the game.

Junior keeper Lacey Lopez stopped 11 of 13 shots.
