SSHS golfers finish fourth in first tourney
From Staff Reports

Feb. 20, 2004 -- MOUNT PLEASANT -- Dustin Gideon carded an 81 on Tuesday, leading the Sulphur Springs golf team to a fourth-place finish at the 20-team Mount Pleasant Invitational.

It was the first tournament of the year for the Wildcats, who had four varsity players all shoot 87 or under.

Gideon's round of 81 was the 11th-best score in the tournament. He was followed by Seth Northcutt with an 85, Caleb Beck an 86 and Chase Helm's 87. Hutton Harris' round of 90 did not count in the team score, but it was the deciding tie-breaker when SSHS tied Pine Tree No. 2 for fourth place.

The Wildcats shot a 339 total, trailing Pine Tree No. 1 (319), Hallsville (332) and Texas High (333). The only other District 11-4A team in the tournament was Paris, which finished 17th with a 382.

"I was pretty pleased, considering this was the first tournament of the spring, and the Mount Pleasant course is pretty tough, and nobody on the team had ever seen the course," said SSHS head coach Doug Evans. "We left room for improvement, but the course did play pretty tough as the scores indicate."

The SSHS junior varsity finished behind Paris' varsity in 18th place with a 416 total. Sam Dolan led the squad with a 91, followed by Brent Askins with a 93, Collin Alexander and Chandler Harris both with a 116, and Chris Clark with a 120.
