Feb. 6, 2004 -- Three Sulphur Springs Wildcats were honored recently for their work in the classroom as well as the football field.
Senior deep-snapper Zane Brown was named to the Second Team Academic All-State team by the Texas High School Coaches Association, while classmates quarterback Ryan Henry and outside linebacker Brandon Skelton were Honorable Mention selections.
The awards are based on a student's grade point average, class rank, college entrance exam scores and recommendations from both the coach and the school's counselor or principal. To be considered, a senior player must have a cumulative GPA of 92 or above for their high school career and be of "good moral character."
The players were presented certificates for the honor at Thursday night's Captains' Dinner at Shannon Oaks Church of Christ.
"We've had several kids make receive this honor the past several years because the academics standards at Sulphur Springs High School are high," said SSHS head coach Brad Turner. "This is certainly something to be proud of because it shows they worked hard in the classroom as well as the football field."
Brown was a premiere deep-snapper and also played defensive end, scoring a touchdown on a fumble recovery against Athens.
Henry, who also plays basketball, finished his football career as the top passer in school history.
Skelton, who qualified for the state powerlifting meet last spring, was an All-District pick at outside linebacker.
