August 30, 2004 - ALBA - Behind strong running from Brandon Brown and a defensive stand late in the ball game, the Cumby Trojans left Panther Stadium with a 20-7 win Friday night over the Alba-Golden Panthers.
Second-year coach Kent Hawthorne's Trojans are now 1-0 on the season and will travel to Rockwall Christian to face the Warriors Friday night. Kickoff for the game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
Senior Brandon Brown scored his only touchdown of the game late in the fourth quarter from eight yards out to give the Trojans a 20-7 lead. The PAT was missed. Brown ended the game with 106 yards on 15 carries and one touchdown.
After a brief electrical outage in the first quarter, power was restored at the stadium and Cumby senior quarterback Matt Steward hit Jake Petty in the corner of the end zone for their first touchdown and a 6-0 lead.
Steward went 4-of-18 for 100 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Petty was the leading receiver with three receptions for 64 yards and a TD.
In the third quarter, Steward hit paydirt from 25 yards out to give the Trojans a 13-0 lead. He finished with 51 yards rushing on four carries and a TD.
After a touchdown by Alba-Golden to bring the game to within seven at 13-6, the Trojans' defense held the Panthers on a six-play, goal-line stand to seal any chance of a comeback for Alba-Golden.
Cumby had 352 yards of offense in the game compared to 167 for the Panthers.
In Hawthorne's first season at Cumby, the Trojans went 2-8 overall and 2-3 in district play.
In other non-district 16-A games, the Como-Pickton Eagles shutout Rivercrest 60-0, Quinlan Boles thumped Maud 30-6, Collinsville blanked Detroit 48-0, Rockwall Christian beat Melissa 21-7, Wolfe City doubled-up on Honey Grove 26-13, and Celeste lost to Blooming Grove 29-13.
