Green, relay set more school records
From Staff Reports

April 26, 2004 -- MESQUITE -- Another meet, two more school records for the Sulphur Springs High School sprinters.

Junior Keelan Green broke the school record he set just a week ago when he blazed a 10.53 time in the 100 meters at the regional qualifiers meet Friday at Hanby Stadium.

Green established the old mark at the 11-4A meet when he ran a 10.62 to break Chris Wright's 12-year-old record of 10.64. Then, on Saturday, he rewrote his name atop the record book with a fully automated time almost a full tenth of a second better than the previous week.

He placed second in the race behind Tyler Lee's Ravyn Hayward, who clocked a 10.49.

"Keelan continues to run well," said SSHS coach Robert Wallace. "He and the runner from Tyler Lee were right together at the tape."

The Wildcats' 4x100 relay team, composed of John Hall, Keenan Clayton, Green and Kendall Wright, also smashed the previous school record by running a 42.03, breaking the 14-year-old record of 42.5. The team placed fifth in the race, which was won by Mesquite Poteet.

Kendall Wright ran his best time of the season in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles -- and the second best time in school history -- with a 38.08 clocking. Only Jeremy Donahoe's time of 37.75, ran last season, is faster. Wright outsprinted a Poteet runner over the last two hurdles to win the race.

"That was Kendall's best time to the first hurdle," Wallace said. "Then, he and the Poteet guy were right together with two hurdles to go, and Kendall just took off and left him."

He also ran in the 110 hurdles, but finished fifth in a time of 15.40. He was leading after the first two hurdles, but hit the next three barriers to fall back, Wallace said.

Shot putter Jordan Jones also placed at the meet, taking fourth with a heave of 51 feet, 11 1/4 inches. Triple jumper Jonathan Lindley, who pulled a hamstring at the district meet, did not jump but will likely be ready for Friday's regional meet.

The meet was the final one for the Wildcats before the Class 4A, Region II contest Friday at Saturday at the University of North Texas.

Also participating in the regional meet will be Jayden Spencer and Zack Wilhite in the pole vault, and high jumper Sara Barrett and shot putter Bridgette Nash in the girls' division.
