|C-P ends season on winning note|
|From Staff Reports|
April 24, 2004 -- Como-Pickton ended its season on a winning note, as Christy Hunt went the distance on the mound, and Brittney Wright singled home the winning run in the fifth, as the Lady Eagles took a 4-3 come-from-behind win over Quitman Friday in their final game of the 2004 season on senior night.
Hunt (11-7) finished her senior year on a bright note, although a trip to the playoffs was definitely in the team's plans just a short week ago. She allowed four hits, three runs (one earned) and struck out four.
CPHS (13-7, 9-5 District 14-2A) trailed 3-1 entering the bottom of the fifth inning before it finally got things in gear.
Hunt and Chelsea Harrison walked, while Taylor Moss' bunt single eluded a Lady Bulldog defender and allowed her to race all the way to third and tie the game. Moss scored the game winner on Wright's single to right.
The game started off rough for the Lady Eagles once again, as they committed two errors in the first inning that put them down 1-0 early.
CPHS tied the game in the second, when Elizabeth Melton walked, moved to second on an Ashley Darby grounder and scored on Kathryn Humphrey's drive to deep left field.
QHS took the lead in the third on a blooper to center field and padded its margin in the fifth on an RBI groundout.
The Lady Eagles got the win but were sad once the final out was made, wishing they would've played better in a couple of games so they could've advanced to the postseason.
"We didn't do what we set out to do, but I enjoyed my senior year," Moss said. "I will miss all my friends as we go our separate ways, but I hope we can keep in contact with each other."
It was a tough ending for seniors Hunt, Wright, Harrison, Moss, Darby, Humphrey, Charlot Harper and Shannon Russell. It might be a while before a class with this talent walks the halls of Como-Pickton High School. While most won't be putting on the uniform again, some will be taking it to the next level. Moss is expected to accept an offer to play at the University of Hawaii.
