April 21, 2004 -- FORT WORTH -- Sulphur Springs fell short of its goal of finishing in the top five during Tuesday's second round of regional tournament action at Fort Worth's Doral Golf Resort, but there is a lot of promise for the future.
The Lady Cats return all five golfers next season from a group that finished seventh with a combined 828. They came into the day in eighth place but shaved 16 shots off their Monday score of 422.
"I'm not really disappointed, but we didn't play our best golf either," SSHS head coach Kell Clopton said. "The one thing that did get to me was the fact that McKinney North finished fourth, and we beat them in district."
The team of juniors Faith Harry, Elizabeth Stump, Valerie Walker and Brooke Wilson along with freshman Whitney McDaniel each had their ups and downs in the two-day affair.
Harry, who has improved more than any golfer on the team throughout the course of the season, fired a 98 to go along with her 102 on Monday to finish with an even 200.
The Lady Wildcats shot the back nine first Tuesday, and Harry responded by shooting a stellar 44. She finished with a 54 on the front nine, and she said she should have fared better.
"I was disappointed with the way my final nine holes went," Harry said. "I shot a 45 in our practice round and did good on the back nine, but I needed to do better. We all could've done better. I think the pressure of regionals got to us a bit."
Stump was perhaps the brightest spot of the day. Although she shot four strokes better during Monday's first round, she still finished with a 204, 16 shots better than her performance in last week's district tournament at Pottsboro's Tanglewood Resort. She hopes to put both aspects of her game together in the future.
"I did pretty good I guess," Stump said. "It was a rather difficult course with a lot of woods and some narrow fairways. I drove the ball well the first day and putted better today (Tuesday)."
McDaniel has seen better days, as she struggled both rounds and finished with a 209. Walker shot a 218, while Wilson improved in her second round by six strokes to finish at 220.
The windy conditions didn't make for easy golfing on the course designed by professional golfer Greg Norman, but Clopton pointed out that it wasn't an excuse.
"Everybody had to play in it," Clopton said. "The wind did play a factor, but it's nothing anyone can really complain about."
District 11-4A was well represented, as the only two non-Highland Park players to finish in the Top 10 were both from that district.
Sherman junior Emiley Patton followed Monday's 80 with an 83 to finish with a 163, one stroke better than Highland Park Gold's Brynn Anderson. Patton will join Highland Park Gold's Peyton Riley in the state tournament which will be held May 10-11 in Austin. McKinney North's Jessica Garza, who beat Patton in last week's district tournament, finished eighth with a two-day total of 172. Anderson will still get to join her team at state, as both Highland Park teams advanced for yet another year.
